Lennon wins; Malone boys third

VERONA — Peru's Dan Lennon covered the muddy 5,000-meter Vernon course in 16 minutes, 55.1 seconds to claim the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Class B cross country championship.

Lennon, runner-up a season ago and one of the top-three runners in the state, drew off to win by 6.6 seconds over Ryan Monahan of Marcellus in the Class B race. Lennon's time was second-fastest on the day, topped only by Class A winner Nick Ryan of Fayetteville-Manlius who won in 16:28.4.

Lennon, who ran a 16:07 over the course in the pre-state meet invitational in September, was looking to take a shot at the course record (16:00), but the conditions took care of any record attempts Saturday.

"The coach from the host school said three days ago, the course was in perfect condition for a perfect 16; today, it was more in line for a perfect 17," Lennon related.

He improved on his start, however.

"I got out a lot faster than I did last year. That's something I've been working on," he related.

He ran in the top five the entire race, taking turns on the lead.

"I got the lead a few times. I would surge in front, but then it always seemed like a turn would come up and I would slip," Lennon continued.

"The final 600 meters there was one really long dry spot left. I said to myself 'if I go here, there's no way the kid (Monahan) can pass me.'

"I pulled away, but I looked down at my shadow and at first, I could still see his (shadow). I looked again, though, and he was gone. It was the fastest separation I've seen."

The Malone boys also turned in an excellent performance, finishing third in Class B team competition. Conor Gordon, in 18:06.3, finished 33rd to lead a tight pack for the Huskies. Corey LaMere (40th), Rourk Marlow (44th), Morgan Marlow (50th) and Doug Fitzgerald (51st) also figured in the scoring for Malone.

Seton Catholic came away with a pair of fifth-place finishes in the team event. The girls were led by eighth-grader Margaret Champagne (11th, 21:59.3) and sophomore Nicole Blazicek (19th, 22:25.9), while the boys were paced by Mitchell Ryan (21st, 18:50.6) and Barrett Waling (39th, 19:37.9).

Lennon will pass up the New York State Federation meet this weekend to prepare for the Footlocker regionals on Long Island in 2 weeks. A top-10 finish there will earn Lennon a spot in the Footlocker championships in San Diego in December.

Lennon also hopes to decide soon on a college for next year.

"Right now, it's between Wisconsin and Syracuse," he said. "I'd like to make a decision this week."
