CLINTONVILLE — The Ticonderoga Sentinels did what no other team had done against Cambridge this season — take a lead.
The lead, however, only lasted 1:46 as the Sentinels just could not stop Skyler Saunders.
Saunders rushed for 266 yards and four touchdowns to give Cambridge a 44-25 victory in NYSPHSAA regional football action Friday at AuSable Valley High School.
"It was fun to play a football game," Indians coach Doug Luke said. "It's fun dominating, but that obviously didn't happen tonight.
"They're a good football team — the first challenge we have had all season. It was sometimes hard to watch."
Cambridge captured a 16-0 lead in the first quarter after two Saunders rushing touchdowns — the second of which was setup by an interception.
Ticonderoga got moving on its second possession of the contest and capped it with a Nate Lenhart sneak up the middle for a 1-yard score.
Lenhart again found the end zone on the Sentinels' next opportunity, this time from 3 yards out to pull within four points, 16-12.
"We got down 16-0. But my kids weren't going to stop chipping wood," Ticonderoga coach Bob Sutphen said.
"Our kids were in it the whole time. If we don't throw that pick on our first possession, it's 8-8, maybe 8-6."
The Indians pulled ahead 24-12 on Aaron Mulready's 30-yard run.
Then the Sentinels did something they hadn't done a lot of during the season — go to the air.
Lenhart connected with Ryan Borho on a 7-yard touchdown to end the first half.
On its first possession of the third, Ticonderoga again went to the air. This time Lenhart found a streaking Will Lawrie for a 67-yard scoring strike.
The score gave the Sentinels a 25-24 lead — the first time the Indians had trailed all season long.
"Physically, they handled us in the second quarter; they did a good job," Luke said. "They were running the ball straight at us. They stretched us out and then ran (Borho) up the middle. Then we'd go inside, and (Lenhart) would run to the outside.
"Then they hit that long pass."
Saunders found the end zone for the third time on a 1-yard rush to put Cambridge back in front for good.
"The one thing they never really did was shut our offense down," Luke said. "I felt we could score, and I felt we could come back.
"I was worried, but I felt they couldn't stop us totally."
Saunders added his fourth touchdown on a 6-yard rush. Bryant Gibbons closed the scoring with a 24-yard fumble recovery for a score.
Mulready also crossed the 100-yard rushing plateau with 110. The Indians finished with 377 yards on 51 carries.
Ethan English completed eight passes for 149 yards.
Lenhart paced the Sentinels' rushing attack with 88 yards and two touchdowns. He also completed five passes for 108 yards.
Borho added 67 yards rushing, while Jay Hebert finished with 56.
"I am proud of our kids," Sutphen said. "The kids have done a great job all season. We won our section and took out two of our rivals to do so.
"We fell short and we feel the heartbreak. The kids worked hard all season, and in the offseason. We had a great group of kids this year, and I hope their work ethic has rubbed off on the underclassmen."
