10 YEARS AGO (2000)

P.J. Gondek is named men's soccer coach at SUNY Fredonia.

Ed McCallister returns as head coach of the Lake City Stars with the resignation of Mike LaBarre.

Lloyd Browne shoots an 82 for low gross honors in the Senior Open at Whiteface Golf Resort. Tom Fish and Dave Vivian tie for second with 83s. Ray Bearisto posts low net 69.

Matt King and Brenda King win the club championships at Adirondack Golf & Country Club while Eric LaBounty and Paige Raville capture the club titles at Bluff Point.

20 YEARS AGO (1990)

Chazy's George Hubbell, 70, achieves gold-star status with U.S. Masters Swimming for doing 10 100-yard freestyles in a specific time.

Jacsue Kermit, owned by Friend Cross and driven by his son, Eugene, lowers the record for pacers to 2:03.0 for the Essex County Fair.

Tom Harrigan scores in the 133rd minute to give Peabody's a 3-2 victory over Willsboro and its sixth straight Adirondack Amateur Soccer Association title. Harrigan gets 2 goals and Eric Husselbeck, one, while Bob Mowry and Walter Hill account for the Willsboro girls.

Justin Frechette, Jason Sample, Tim Barcomb and Dean Nephew receive individual awards in the Plattsburgh Summer Hockey Division.

25 YEARS AGO (1985)

Sue Klein, 17, wins the first Colchester (Vt.) Triathlon, finishing first in a field of 80 females.

Wayne Guay and Kelly Penfield win the Sixth Pepsi Little Caesar's Mixed Doubles, beating Dick and Celine Cable in the final.

Al D'lano shoots a 66 to equal the Bluff Point course record held by Jim Couts.

John Butler, Randy Brown, John Stewart and Wayne Wilkins each get 2 hits to lead the City Bees to an 8-5 win over Cumberland Head in the Babe Ruth Upper Division final.

30 YEARS AGO (1980)

Paul Einsmann and Kevin Baldwin help the Adirondack Region defeat New York City 109-95 in the gold-medal game at the Empire State Games. Hal Cohen leads the winers with 27 while Rick Carlisle chips in with 18.

Jody Johnston pitches 8 scoreless innings in a victory over Auburn to improve his record to 6-2 with the Little Falls Mets of the NY-Penn League.

Yvette Pageau, Pinky Labarge, Cheryl Pageau, Theresa Bosley, Lynn Poissant and Cindy Mooso are the hitting stars as Ayerst sweeps Stable Lawn & Garden to capture the Little Towns Women's Softball League crown.

Tim Tobin, John Peria, Fred LaMere and Bill Jost each get 3 hits as Club 86 whips The Belevedere 11-4 on its way to the Black Fly Slo-Pitch League title and the Jack Merrill Memorial Trophy.

40 YEARS AGO (1970)

Ron Hoy pitches a 4-hitter with 13 strikeouts and goes 5-for-5 with a homer and 2 triples to lead North Plattsburgh to a 20-4 win over Keeseville in Pony League baseball. Robare belts 2 homers for Keeseville.

Winning pitcher Nancy Trudeau is 4-for-4 and Sally Hulbert, 5-for-5, as Cadyville defeats Rouses Point to win the Division I Babe Ruth softball title.

Dale Moss of Westport wins the demolition derby at the Essex County Fair.

Irma Denicore, Gladys LaMere, Rita Quinn, Gert Rusterholtz, Joanne Whalen and Dot Mitchell lead Plattsburgh to the ladies' interclub championship in golf.

50 YEARS AGO (1960)

Chester Przylucki, 25, of Ithaca, is named football coach at Plattsburgh High School.

Steve Lorry socks an inside-the-park grand slam and Dick Dandrow adds a homer to back winning pitcher Bruce Copeland as the Plattsburgh Little League All-Stars thump Verdun, Que. 14-1.

Winning pitcher Jim Duprey helps his cause with a triple as Peru downs Cadyville 4-1 to clinch first in the Senior Baseball League.

Winning pitcher Charlotte Champagne strikes out 12 as Morrisonville beats Keeseville 7-3 in Senior Girls Softball.

60 YEARS AGO (1950)

Lefty Tessier pitches a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts as the Plattsburgh Kiwanis team routs Norwood 26-0 in Division 7 play.

George Dyer belts a 3-run homer to spur the Beekmantown Ponies to a 7-1 win over the Plattsburgh Imperials. Jim O'Connell pitches a 2-hitter with 9 strikeouts.

Sam Bailey, Charlie Dragoon and Ray Mousseau get 3 hits apiece and Johnny O'Brien hits a grand slam to carry AuSable Forks to a 16-5 win over Rouses Point, giving the Firemen their fourth Champlain Valley League title in five years.

Ray Perron hits a 2-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to lift Lake Placid to a 7-5 win over Lyon Mountain. The Miners, trailing 5-2, tied it in the top of the inning on Andy Baker's pinch-hit homer and Roger Tolosky's two-run blast.

70 YEARS AGO (1940)

Bobsled ace Billy Fiske, 29, dies of wounds received in aerial combat with German bombers that had launched a massive attack on England. An American, he joined the R.A.F. five months earlier.
