AMSTERDAM— The Plattsburgh North Stars won't get a chance to defend their Empire Football League title.
The Albany Metro Mallers, behind Wildcat quarterback C.J. Tarver, broke loose in the second half to defeat the North Stars, 29-14, in an EFL semifinal playoff game Saturday night at Lynch Middle School.
Tarver rushed for two touchdowns out of the direct-snap formation and also threw for a score in the second half to Culture Branch.
"Hats off to Albany," North Stars coach Pat Keleher said. "They had a solid game plan and they played good defense.
"And the difference was (Tarver) in the Wildcat — he just makes things happen."
After trailing 6-0 early, the North Stars took a 7-6 lead after they stripped the punt returner of the ball and James Blocker recovered it in the end zone.
Zach Blocker extended Plattsburgh's lead with a 55-yard scoring run in the second half, followed by a Mitch Ryder extra point, to give the North Stars a 14-6 lead.
Then Albany turned to Tarver and the Wildcat.
"The one thing I feared happened — they decided to go to their Wildcat with C.J. Tarver, and man he is something," Keleher said. "He took them down the field before the half and scored."
Tarver's rushing touchdown, followed by his 2-point conversion run, sent the game into halftime tied.
After going back and forth for a few series, Tarver added his second rushing touchdown and then found Branch in the end zone.
Branch made what Keleher called a "spectacular catch" with two North Stars covering him.
Plattsburgh had a great scoring opportunity midway through the fourth quarter. The North Stars were set up with first and goal from the 7 but couldn't reach paydirt.
"We battled, we played hard," Keleher said. "We were short some guys and it showed. We left three starters at home and we had a couple of injuries early in the game that put us in a situation where we couldn't make a lot of subs in the nickel and dime packages."
The Metro Mallers will play the winner of Syracuse and Glens Falls in the EFL championship game Oct. 22.
