Facteau, Esposito run at SLU
CANTON — Sarah Facteau earned two second-place finishes Saturday at the St. Lawrence Invitational indoor track meet.

Facteau ran a 5:15.41 in the mile to finish behind the Saints' Wendy Pavlus (5:15.41) and clocked a 2:20.83 in the 800 meters. Julia Malleck of the University of Ottawa won that race in 2:18.30.

Mike Esposito ran a personal-best 4:50.21 in the mile to place 22nd. Esposito, 47, took third in his 800 heat with a 2:10.31.

Both runners are members of the Peru Track Club and are preparing for the Masters Indoor Track & Field Championships in March.

Cardinals' MacLeod, Leis cited
FREDONIA — The State University of New York Athletic Conference has chosen Plattsburgh State's Matty MacLeod and Josh Leis as the player and goalie of the week, for the period ending Sunday.

A sophomore defenseman from Woburn, Mass., MacLeod led the Cardinals with five points on two goals and three assists from his spot on the blueline. His week was highlighted by a career-high four points against the Brockport Golden Eagles. He is a first-time winner of the award.

Leis, a freshman from Kitchener, Ont., played a large part in helping Plattsburgh go 2-0-1 overall for the week by going 1-0-1 himself. He had a 0.96 goals-against average, while stopping 39 of 41 shots for a .952 save percentage. He also won the weekly award on Jan. 4.

YMCA Kids' Night Out Saturday
PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh YMCA will host Kids' Night Out Saturday, from 5-8 p.m. for boys and girls in grades K-6. There will be swimming, rockwall, DDR and Wii games, pizza and crafts.

You can register at the front desk of the YMCA or by calling 561-4290. The fee is $10 for members, $12 for non-members.

Fishin' for Mission draws 168
CHAZY LAKE — The First Fishin' for the Mission Ice-Fishing Derby was held Saturday on Chazy Lake with a 168 anglers entered. The tournament benefit the North Country Mission of Hope for Nicaragua.

Todd Hall took first in the Pike category with a catch of 23.87 pounds, believed to be the largest great northern taken from the lake. Randy Rascoe came in second with a catch of 6.2 pounds and Tim Whitelaw, third, 5.82.

Scott LaMay won the lake trout category with an 8.9-pounder. Mike Holmes was runner-up with a 7.94-pound laker and Paul Petrashune, third, 7.42.

Dan Patterson landed the biggest perch, 1.08 pounds. Jared St. Phillips took the next two places with catches of .59 and .50 pounds.

Youths invited to meet Cards
PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton County Youth Bureau will present the Meet the Cardinal Men's & Women's Basketball Teams Saturday at the SUNY Plattsburgh Memorial Hall Gymnasium on Rugar Street. The Cardinal teams will play SUNY New Paltz with the women's game at 2 p.m. and the men's at 4 p.m.

Any youngster, wearing a county basketball team jersey and accompanied by a paying adult, will receive free admission and a free "Go Cards" wristband. There will be an autograph session held after each game.

Kids' hoop event has openings
LAKE PLACID — The Jim Kordziel Basketball Tournament will be held Saturday, Feb. 13, from 12:30-7 p.m. at Lake Placid Central School. All divisions are accepting teams with the tournament open to girls, boys and coed teams at the fifth-sixth grade level and third-fourth grade level.

There is no entry fee. Spectators will be asked to make a small donation with proceeds to go to the Jim Kordziel Scholarship Fund at Lake Placid Central School. There will be a 50/50 raffle and a concession stand.

Family outdoor adventure set
CADYVILLE — The Clinton County Youth Bureau and the Town of Plattsburgh Recreation Department will co-host a Family Winter Outdoor Adventure Program Feb. 17-19. Cornell Cooperative Extension will assist on Feb. 18.

The free, three-day program will introduce youths, 7 years of age and older, and their families to such skills as hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, environmental issues, winter survival, team work and outdoor leadership skills. Previous hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing skills not required. The program will consist of:

Wednesday, Feb. 17 — An introduction to snowshoeing and cross-country skiing at Cadyville Rec. Park.

Thursday, Feb. 18 — The group will meet at Cadyville Rec. Park where they will snowshoe while learning how to navigate in the outdoors, learn about the environment and go on a scavenger hunt.

Friday, Feb. 19 — The group will meet at Cadyville Rec Park to snowshoe and learn some winter survival skills, as well as, work together in team games and activities.

All equipment will be provided. Hot chocolate will be served each day. The program will begin at 2 p.m. daily and end at 4 p.m. each afternoon. Pre-Registration is required.

St.Mary's tourney has openings
CHAMPLAIN — The Ninth-Annual Presidents' Challenge Elementary Basketball Tournament will be held Feb. 12-14 at St. Mary's Academy with room for three more teams. The tournament is for fifth- and sixth-grade boys teams and will include a hot shot contest.

Entry fee is $75 per team with the tourney format pool play followed by single elimination. Each team is guaranteed three games. Registration will close Feb. 2.

Champlain KofC honors champs
CHAMPLAIN — Five girls and four boys, ages 10-14, were crowned champions of the 2010 Knights of Columbus Free-Throw Championship, held Sunday at St. Mary's Academy. Fr. Francis X. Chagnon Council #3525 in Champlain sponsored the local competition.

The winners are: Girls- Lilly Hayes (age 10), Bailey Pepper (11), Rachel Pombrio (12), Sarah Babbie (13), and Abbie Miller (14). Boys- Dylan Grenon (10), Gavin Landole (11), Jacob Brown (12), and Zachery Houglin (13).

Gavin Landole also won the district level competition and will move on to compete in the regional level on March 6 in Massena.



Spring football loop to meet
MALONE — The Upstate New York Spring Football League will meet Thursday, Jan. 28, at 5 p.m. at the Malone YMCA to discus plans for the July 3-4 International All-Star Weekend. The agenda will include discussion on budgeting for the different events, field location and regulations, golf tournament format & ideas, sub committees for different event responsibilities.

Spring gridders, coach to meet
MALONE — The Upstate New York Spring Football League will hold a mandatory meeting for all players and coaches Sunday, Jan. 31, at 1 p.m. at the Malone YMCA.

League officials will go over players' requirements for the season and International All-Star Weekend. Also, what is included in the player's registration fee, for the season and all-star event that concludes the season.

Coaches will discuss their expectations and when practices will begin as well as offensive and defensive formats for the upcoming season. All players in the League Policy are required to attend team meetings, practices, fundraisers and games to qualify for the International All-Star Weekend. This will be the start of being in compliance with the policy.

The blog, maintained mostly by the coaching staff, is aimed to give followers a closer connection to the Cardinal men's soccer program. AuSable, B'town meet tonight
CLINTONVILLE — AuSable Valley will host Beekmantown at 6 p.m. Wednesday in varsity boys' basketball. It will be a non-league game, filling the opening created when Northern Adirondack discontinued its program for the year.

Rouses Point fishing derby set
ROUSES POINT — The Rouses Point Sportsmen's Club will hold its 17th-Annual Ice Fishing Derby Feb. 13-14 with fishing hours midnight Friday through 3:30 p.m. Sunday. The boundary lines are New York from the mouth of the Great Chazy River north to the Canadian border and in Vermont, Kelly Bay north to the Canadian border.

Weigh station hours at the Rouses Point Sportsmen's Club will be 4-6 p.m. Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday.

Entry fees are $15 and can be purchased at The Last Resort, Lake Champlain Fish Company, and Cornerstone Drug.

Prizes for northern pike will be $350 for first, $150 for second and $100, third. The biggest pickerel will be worth $50.

A fish fry and chowder will follow the closing of the weigh station on Sunday, depending on fish donations from derby entrants, free of charge for club members and paid derby participants. There will be a $5 per person contribution for non-members.
