Cardinals solve Norwich test

PLATTSBURGH — When asked how his team played Tuesday, Plattsburgh State coach Kevin Houle chuckled and said, "Geez, which period?"

The Cardinals had to figure out how to play against a Norwich team they had never seen before. But the puck went in all three periods and Plattsburgh State picked up a 7-2 nonconference win at Stafford Ice Arena.

Megan DiJulio and Kate Fairfield scored twice and Laurie Bowler earned three assists.

The Cadets played a trap that gave the Cardinals (13-1-1) trouble at times, especially in the second period.

"They played a different style that we haven't played against, and we weren't prepared," Houle said. "Not knowing how they played, in the first period I thought we played pretty well.

"But you could see them playing better, kind of shoring things up with their forecheck. And you could see if they kept working at it and didn't get frustrated, they could be in the game. And they were for a while."

Kelsey Cone gave the Cadets a 1-0 lead in the middle of the first period, but they were down two goals by the end.

Steph Moon chipped in the puck from the right side, and Kayla McDougall scored from the right circle 21 seconds later. DiJulio made it 3-1 with 28 seconds left in the period.

Norwich (11-3-3) had just three shots on net in the period.

DiJulio added to the lead early in the second, skating in and putting the puck between Cindy Fortin's glove and the near post — somehow.

"I was about as shocked as I think the goalie was," DiJulio said. "Just going hard to the net and hope it goes in."

The Cadets then spent plenty of time in the Cardinals' zone and pulled to within two goals at 10:52. Norwich finished the period with a 9-8 advantage in shots.

Houle said the Cardinals adjusted better to Norwich's forecheck in the third, and they had another three-goal period while outshooting the Cadets 18-3. Fairfield sandwiched her goals around one from Helen Giroux.

Moon and McDougall both totaled two points. Mandy Mackrell had 13 saves in her 10th win.

Melissa Rundlett made Norwich 2-for-2 on the power play when she buried a rebound in the middle of the second. Houle said the Cadets' first goal was just a good play and the Cardinals had a communication breakdown on the second. The Cardinals did successfully kill off one penalty in the third.

They work on the kill twice a week in practice, but their percentage keeps dropping.

"We're probably going to go down to last in the country on the PK after this," Houle said. "Maybe we have to stop working on it."
