BRUSHTON — Josh Sevey put on a show Monday night, but the Moriah Vikings came away with a 66-65 victory over the Brushton-Moira Panthers in a non-league basketball game.
The game, originally scheduled for the Section VII-X Challenge, was postponed because of the weather.
Sevey, needing seven points to go over 1,000 for his career, eclipsed that mark in the first quarter when he nailed four 3-pointers, including a halfcourt shot at the buzzer. He went on to lead all scorers with 24 points.
"He can shoot. He had a couple of open looks, but most of his shots were contested," Moriah Coach Brian Cross said.
With Sevey leading the charge, the hosts took a 36-32 halftime lead and stretched it to 11 in the third quarter.
"We switched to a zone (defense). They were eating us alive in man-to-man; they were hot," Cross recalled.
The Vikings countered with the Gilbo brothers. Nick scored seven and Nathan, six, in the fourth quarter to fuel the rally. Each finished with 18 points.
Nick Gilbo's 3-point play with less than two minutes to go put Moriah ahead, but poor foul shooting prevented the Vikings from pulling away. They missed four free throws in the final 30 seconds.
Brushton-Moira had a chance to pull out the game. With seven seconds left, a Panthers' player drove the length of the court, only to lose the ball out of bounds underneath the basket.
Ralph Schofield chipped in with 11 points for Moriah while Nathan Gilbo grabbed 14 rebounds and Nick Gilbo, seven. Hayden Whalen had seven rebounds.
