PLATTSBURGH — Jacob Layton hit a 3-pointer early in the first quarter Wednesday to give Chateaugay a 3-2 advantage — and the Bulldogs never looked back.

Chateaugay held the lead the remainder of the game en route to a 49-39 Class D boys' regional semifinal victory over Crown Point at the Plattsburgh State Field House.

The Bulldogs advance to meet Germantown in the regional finals this weekend at the Field House.

Layton's early score spurred a 16-0 run that immediately put Crown Point in a hole.

"What killed us was that early run," Crown Point coach Randy Mandy said. "We called a couple timeouts to calm the kids down, and they did ... but the shots just didn't fall for us."

Layton, who finished the game with 12 points, accounted for seven of Chateaugay's first nine and made a big 3-pointer as the shot clock expired midway through the second quarter.

The Bulldogs entered the third quarter with a 12-point lead, but Crown Point came out of the half poised to cut into its deficit.

The Panthers' big man, John Budwick, outscored the entire Chateaugay team in the third quarter. Budwick scored all of Crown Point's 12 third-quarter points, and Chateaugay only put up nine in the stanza.

Budwick also grabbed 18 rebounds in the game.

"That was our gameplan," Mandy said. "Feed John inside. We didn't do that in the first half."

It was obvious Budwick was posing problems for the Bulldog defense, but taking him out of the picture was a never-ending battle.

"Budwick is hard to get at," Chateaugay coach Ron Boyea said. "We just had to get more guys on him. But they also have some other guys who can shoot. They played hard."

Boyea said his team didn't play smart offensively for a majority of the game, but added that "it's always great to be able to play for one more day."

Chateaugay's Eli Franze, who led his team with 15 points, got into a rhythm in the fourth quarter. Franze accounted for nine of his team's 12 fourth-quarter points.

Alex Stalter grabbed a team-high 10 boards in the game and added five points for the Bulldogs, and teammate Eric Dwyer picked up four steals and seven assists.

"Congratulations to Chateaugay — they have an outstanding team," Mandy said. "For us, we had a great season going 11-1 in (MVAC) D-II and 16-6 overall ... nothing to hang our heads about. I'd just like to thank our fans and the Crown Point school system."
