PLATTSBURGH — The Ticonderoga girls' basketball team, to its credit, played hard right to the end Wednesday.
But the Sentinels couldn't keep pace with state-ranked Brushton-Moira in NYSPHSAA Class C regional semifinal action at the Plattsburgh State Fieldhouse.
The Section X champions (21-1) raced out to a 17-4 lead in the first quarter and didn't look back in a 54-32 victory.
Brushton-Moira moves on to the regional finals against Section II champion Maple Hill on Saturday at 1:45 p.m. at Adirondack Community College.
"The kids are happy to win, but we can't be content with how we played," said Brushton-Moira coach Sam Dumont. "We still need to play a more complete game.
"We did some nice things on the defensive end but still had some letdowns along the way."
"I'm proud of my kids because they played as hard as they could," said Ticonderoga coach Shelly Young. "We played better than we did against Seton Catholic (in the Section VII championship game).
"Their full-court pressure didn't bother us that much, but they were faster than we are. They surprised us with how fast they were. They're a good team."
Taylor Keck led the Panthers' balanced offensive attack with 11 points, while Kelsey Manchester followed with 10 and Shayna Russell had eight.
The Panthers got into their transition game early and jumped out to a 13-point lead after one, including scoring 15 points in a row after falling behind, 2-0. Several of the baskets came on layups.
"Our defense feeds the offense," Dumont said. "We wanted to get the ball wide on the break and attack the basket. I think we caught them off guard with our quickness."
"They got a lot of fastbreak baskets in the first quarter because of their speed," Young said. "It took us a while before we settled down.
"We also missed some shots early. Maybe it could have been a little different if we make them."
Chenice Russell's two free throws gave the Panthers a 23-4 lead early in the second quarter.
But the Sentinels tallied the next six points, five by Jamie Patchett, and cut their deficit to 23-10.
Brushton-Moira then stretched it out to 30-14 at the half.
"We got on a little bit of a run for a while," Young said.
The Panthers started hitting some outside shots in the third quarter and upped their lead to 46-22 after three.
"They went to a zone and we were too slow passing the ball around it," Dumont said.
"But we were still able to open some gaps and started hitting some outside shots."
A free throw by Jocelyn Barber, who played a strong game, pulled the Sentinels (9-12) to within 20 points — 48-28 — in the fourth. But that was as close as Ticonderoga got.
Barber led the Sentinels with nine points and was followed by Kate Mercer with eight and Patchett with seven.
"Barber kept playing hard right to the end," Young said. "And Kate Mercer, who doesn't start, played very well with eight points."
