WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team put the finishing touch to a strong first semester Saturday night.
The Cardinals, bouncing back from Friday's 3-2 loss at Middlebury College, rolled to an 8-1 drubbing of Williams College in non-conference play.
With the victory, the Cardinals closed out the first half with a 12-2 overall record.
"It was a very good semester for us, but not unbelievable," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "Maybe it would have been nice to get one more win.
"I'm happy, but not satisfied."
Plattsburgh State showed no effects of the loss the night before.
Shawn Dennis and Joey Wilson scored goals in the first three minutes of the contest to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.
"I was worried about if we would be ready to go," Emery said. "But, we got great leadership and were ready to play from the warm-up on.
"I don't know a lot about Williams, but we played great tonight. We could have made a cycling video off the tape of the game. We were able to get the puck down deep and were opportunistic on the powerplay."
Indeed.
The Cardinals went five-for-10 with a man advantage and the Ephs, one-for-two.
Plattsburgh State received a balanced offensive attack with Phil Farrow leading the way with a goal and three assists.
Dennis, Wilson, Dylan Clarke, Dan Sliasis, Mike Baccaro, Eric Greene and T.J. Cooper all added a goal apiece.
Defensemen Ward Smith and Tom Breslin each picked up a couple of assists.
Plattsburgh State held a 2-0 lead after one and a 5-1 edge after two.
Alex Smigelski's power-play goal was the only scoring in the game for Williams (2-4-1 overall).
Bryan Hince stopped 18 of 19 shots in net for Plattsburgh State to record his 10th win of the season.
Rick Redmond was in net for Williams and turned back 40 shots as the Cardinals held a 48-19 shot advantage.
The Cardinals didn't want to end the semester on a down note by losing twice over the weekend.
"I was hoping for two wins this weekend, but I'll settle for a split," Emery said.
"Now, we can rest for a few weeks and then come back ready to play."
Plattsburgh State is off until hosting the Cardinal Classic on Jan. 4-5 at the Stafford Ice Arena.
