PLATTSBURGH -- Not a bad first semester.
The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team improved its State University of New York Athletic Conference record to 7-0-1 and overall mark to 9-0-2 Saturday with a 5-3 victory over Cortland at the Stafford Ice Arena.
It marked the end of the first half of the season for Plattsburgh State, which is off until hosting the Cardinal Classic on Jan. 2-3.
Dylan Clarke and Riley Hill accounted for all of the Cardinals' scoring against the Red Dragons (5-6-1, 3-4-1), with Clarke getting three goals and Hill adding two.
The top-ranked Cardinals, fresh off Friday night's come-from-behind 4-3 overtime win over rival Oswego, held a 3-2 lead after one.
Mike Maier gave Cortland the lead with the two teams skated four-aside at 8:44, but Clarke then tallied twice to put Plattsburgh State ahead.
Clarke scored at 9:19 and then at 11:08 on the powerplay, off an Eric Satim pass.
Ryan Markell pulled the Red Dragons even at 17:26, only to have Hill tally a power-play goal at 19:08 off a nice passing play with Phil Farrow and Joey Wilson.
It remained 3-2 until Jarrett Gold stuffed the puck past Chris Molinaro, who was making his first start in net this season for the Cardinals, at 12:54 of the second to tie it at 3-all.
Hill then got a fortunate bunce of the puck when he scored on a deflection from the side of the net with 2:03 remaining in the second to put the Cardinals back on top -- this time to stay.
Clarke's tip-in on the powerplay at 1:53 of the third gave the Cardinals their two-goal lead and finished off the scoring.
Plattsburgh State held a 38-24 shot advantage, with Molinaro making 21 saves and Dan Jewell 33 stops for the Red Dragons.
In other SUNYAC contests Saturday night, Oswego skated to a 2-0 win at Potsdam, Brockport recorded a 3-1 victory over Buffalo State and Geneseo topped Fredonia, 6-2.
