PLATTSBURGH -- The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team showed plenty of character Saturday night.
The Cardinals, down by two goals with seven minutes left in regulation to Geneseo, rallied to tie it and C.J. Tozzo's short-handed goal with 1:06 remaining in overtime gave the hosts a dramatic 5-4 win at the Stafford Ice Arena.
Plattsburgh State, which improved to 11-1 overall, finished its first half of play in the State University of New York Athletic Conference with a perfect 9-0 record.
"It was a good win," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "It was a sign of good leadership and character on the part of our team."
The Cardinals, down 4-2 entering the third period, began to play the way they are capable of. Still, Plattsburgh State appeared to be in trouble as they couldn't get the puck past Knights' goaltender Derek Jokic.
But, Phil Farrow began the comeback when he took a centering pass in front and cut the Cardinals' deficit to one at 13:16.
Then, at the 17:13 mark, Riley Hill, with the teams four-aside, skated in front and pulled Plattsburgh State even.
The game went to overtime and Geneseo (4-7, 4-5) had an opportunity to win it when Plattsburgh State was called for an interference penalty at 3:39.
Hill, however, lofted the puck down ice and Tozzo beat everyone to it behind the net. Then, with a Geneseo defender back on him, the senior went around the net and scored on a wrap-around.
"Tozzo plays with a lot of heart and soul," Emery said. "It was good to see him get the game-winner."
The game was tied 1-all after one, with Eric Satim scoring for the Cardinals at 4:10 and then Dan Brown for Geneseo with the teams four-aside at 10:13.
Nick Rolls' slapshot, with Plattsburgh State skating a man up, put the Cardinals back in front at 6:56 of the second.
The Knights, however, then scored three goals within a 3:20 span late in the second stanza to grab a 4-2 lead after two.
Mathieu Cyr tallied power-play goals at 15:38 and at 17:22 to give the Knights the lead.
Then, at 18:58, two former Plattsburgh State players combined to give the Knights a two-goal edge. Casey Smith's slapshot from the point hit Kevin Galan's stick on the way in and deflected past Cardinals' goaltender Bryan Hince.
"Geneseo has some guys who can put the puck in the net and they came in with a good game plan," Emery said. "They did a good job breaking the puck out of their zone. We also had a hard time getting our second player involved in our forecheck. I don't know if that was more because of them or us."
"We didn't play well at all in the first two periods and didn't get the puck in deep. We weren't moving our feet, made some mistakes and took some dumb penalties."
"I told the guys earlier today that we didn't want to beat ourselves. And, that's what we were doing in the first two periods. We're a skating team and we began to play the way we can in the third."
The Cardinals, out-shot by a 17-14 margin over the first two stanzas, held a 20-5 advantage in the third.
Hince finished with 21 saves on 25 shots and Jokic 33 stops on 38 shots.
The Cardinals close out the first semester with two non-conference road games this coming weekend -- at Middlebury College on Friday and then at Williams College on Saturday.
Elsewhere around the SUNYAC on Saturday, Plattsburgh State got some good news when second-place Oswego and Fredonia skated to a 3-all overtime tie. In other games, Cortland pulled out a 5-3 win over Buffalo State and Brockport was a 3-1 winner at Potsdam.
