PLATTSBURGH -- The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team, doing more damage on the powerplay, completed a weekend sweep of Morrisville State with a 6-2 decision Saturday night in State University of New York Athletic Conference play at the Stafford Ice Arena.
The Cardinals, following up on Friday night's 5-1 victory, scored nine power-play goals over the weekend, including four Saturday night.
"I was pleased with the weekend," said Bob Emery, who won his 399th game as head coach at Plattsburgh State. "I liked our territorial offensive play, even though I would like to see us finish more.
"Our powerplay was good all weekend."
The Cardinals (2-0, 2-0) grabbed the lead at 5:00 of the first period when the senior line of T.J. Cooper, Mike Baccaro and C.J. Tozzo had a nice three-way passing play with Cooper ending up getting the goal.
The Mustangs (0-2, 0-2) tied it, however, when Evan Kermohan sent a slapshot from the point past freshman Simon LeBlanc, who was making his first start in net for the Cardinals, at the 9:27 mark of the first.
The Cardinals grabbed a 3-1 second-period lead on power-play goals by Eric Satim down low at 3:24 and then by defenseman Nick Rolls with a long wrister at the 6:34 mark.
The Mustangs, however, got one of the goals back at 7:28 when Joe Herman jumped on a loose puck and sent a slapshot into the net.
The pace picked up after the goal and Plattsburgh State was able to get a big goal at 17:07 when freshman Kyle VanDermale stole the puck and sent a shot over the shoulder of Morrisville netminder Caylin Relkoff to put the Cardinals back up by two.
The freshmen line of VanDermale, Satim and Dylan Clarke, who each scored a goal, was particularly impressive.
