PLATTSBURGH -- The Elks are the Comeback Kids and champions of the Plattsburgh Babe Ruth League.
The Elks, who needed to win on Tuesday to force a Game 3, never led Wednesday until Luke Weaver delivered a game-winning single in the bottom of the 10th. It lifted the Elks to a 9-8 victory over McSweeney's in the deciding contest of the best-of-three championship series.
McSweeney's, the hard-luck runner-up, led 5-0 in the second and carried an 8-5 advantage into the seventh.
But the Elks refused to go away.
Kasey Favreau's one-out single ignited the seventh-inning rally. Ben Weightman followed with a double and Ryan St. Clair brought in a run on a fielder's choice. With two outs, Josh Powers doubled to score another run and an infield error enabled The Elks to knot it at 8 and send the game into extra innings.
Both teams had a runner thrown out at home in the eighth.
Weaver, who allowed only one hit in three innings of relief while striking out four, retired McSweeney's in order in the 10th.
In the Elks' half, Mark Ryan led off with a base on balls, Ben Cyphers reached on an error and Casey Buck was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no one out. Weaver then singled to left to plate the winning run.
Weightman had a triple, double and single to lead The Elks while Weaver had two hits.
Robbie Knowles swung a hot bat for McSweeney's, going 5-for-5, while Chris Roenbeck had three hits, including a double, and John Tregan, two hits with a double. C.J. Worley also had two hits.
Knowles, who came on in the eighth, was tagged with the loss.
Favreau was the starting pitcher for Elks and Worley, the starter for McSweeney's.
The game was originally scheduled for Lefty Wilson Field, but switched to South Acres because of the wet conditions.
