PLATTSBURGH "" Friday's baseball game between the Russian National Team and the Meron's Expos didn't go exactly according to plan.
A heavy downpour earlier in the day washed away any opportunity the two teams had at playing the nine-inning contest at Plattsburgh State's Chip Cummings Field.
Instead, a makeshift field with a portable mound, was used to play the game inside the Plattsburgh State Soccer/Lacrosse Complex on the turf field.
Four innings were played, with neither team scoring using wooden bats, before the contest was called due to more rain in the forecast.
The Russian National Team looked good defensively, but had its problems at the plate "" managing just one hit in four innings off Mike Bergman, who pitched the first three innings while striking out seven, and Joey Painter, who pitched the fourth and final frame.
Meron's, a team of Champlain Valley Baseball League players, put the ball in play but managed only one hit of its own.
Eric Meacham's single up the middle represented the lone hit for Meron's.
"It was disappointing not to be able to play the game in an ideal situation," said Bergman. "But, in all, it was a good experience.
"We held our own against an Olympic-level team and that reflected well on our league.
"We weren't, however, able to see what kind a team they really are. But, they tried to play small ball when they had the opportunity to do so, and their defense really looked good."
