PLATTSBURGH — Russell Merrill led City Fire to the Plattsburgh Babe Ruth championship as he combined with Jared Murphy and Joe Kirkpatrick to strike out 10 batters in a 4-1 victory over McSweeney’s.
City Fire swept the championship series 2-0, for its third consecutive championship.
Merrill was also a star from the plate as he belted out three hits, including a double.
City Fire took an early 2-1 lead after one as Joe Kirkpatrick belted a single to score two in the inning. Anthony Porcelli’s single in the third inning knocked in a pair of runners to close the scoring.
Gus Rietsma added a single for City Fire while Kirkpatrick captured the pitching save. Centerfielder Tom Curran proved to be a defensive standout.
Will Flynn, who suffered the loss on the mound, scored McSweeney’s lone run on a Ryan Bishop single. Brett Palmer led McSweeney’s with a pair of hits. Flynn, C.J. Worley and Matt Drollette each delivered doubles.
