PLATTSBURGH — A couple of weekends ago, the Champlain Valley Elite Junior B hockey program had its Black team reach the finals and its Red team the semifinals in the Boston Selects Junior B Tournament.
The championship trophy, however, went to the Hudson Valley Empire State team, leaving the Elite without their goal of bringing back home a title.
“We wanted to have both teams make it to the finals and we ended up having one,” said Elite head coach/general manager Justin Frechette. “Obviously, our goal as an organization is to win every tournament we play in. And, we can’t be happy not winning a championship.
“The fact that neither team won the title did not sit well with the players. But, we still won seven of nine games. And, we had a lot of our players adjust to the junior level in their first tournament. We will continue to grow.”
Champlain Valley will look for a better ending this weekend when the Black and Red teams take part in their second event of the summer — the Northern Connecticut Wings Junior B Showcase in West Hartford, Ct.
“We’re excited going into the weekend and are looking to having both our B teams made it to the finals,” Frechette said.
The three-day tournament begins today, with the Black team opposing the Massachusetts Mariners at 5 p.m. and the Red team versus the host Northern Connecticut Wings at 7 p.m.
The two local teams each play two games on Saturday with the playoff round set for Sunday.
“There are six teams in the tournament and the top four make it to Sunday’s playoff round,” Frechette said. “The other two teams are eliminated.”
“Our first goal is to be the No. 1 and 2 seeds. We won’t play each other in the round robin.”
The Black and Red teams played a scrimmage Wednesday at the Lake City Stars Arena and the teams tied at 3-all.
“Skill-wise, the two teams are pretty even,” Frechette said. “The Black team is a little older.”
There are a few changes on the two rosters for this weekend. Chris Alston, Jordan Stephney and Matt Trombly have been added to the Red team, while Robert Guay has moved over to the Black team.
