Don’t state as a fact something that is unsubstantiated or that our editors wouldn't know to be true.

Don’t presume someone’s guilt in a case when it hasn't been established by a court.

Don’t assail or impugn an identifiable individual or group. If you have that kind of criticism, sign your name and submit it as a Letter to the Editor. (There is some leeway on this in connection with public officials, but it is not unconditional.)

Don’t use profanity. This includes the term “tea bagger.”

Don’t be incendiary or tasteless. Those qualities are subjective, of course, and our editors will be the arbiters.

Do not identify yourself in the main content area of the article content form. Only by enforcing this rule can the moderators prevent unscrupulous commenters from falsely identifying themselves as someone they are not.

Don't type in all caps. It is considered the Internet equivalent of shouting.

In sports articles, do not criticize officiating.

Remember, moderators are not allowed to edit any article comments. If an article comment fails any of the above criteria, the entire comment will be deleted.

Hogan draws bead on ESG gold

BRONX — Peru’s Pappy Hogan, wrestling for the Adirondack Region in the Empire State Games, turned in a strong showing Thursday while advancing to the finals at 115 pounds in the Greco-Roman scholastic division.

Hogan, who will be a freshman at Peru this year, won four matches without a loss to move into the championship bout where he will wrestle this morning against Long Island’s John Murray.

In Greco-Roman, each of the three periods count as a match and a wrestler needs to take two of the three to win.

In his first match of the day, Hogan recorded a 7-0, 8-0 victory over Hudson Valley’s Mike Kane and followed that up with a 5-0, injury default victory over New York City’s Julian Monar.

Hogan made it three in a row with a 5-0, 8-0 decision over Central’s Talon Sutherden and was then put to the test in a 5-1, 1-2, 2-0 victory over Western’s Casey Engle.



Daly leads decathlon

Former Plattsburgh State standout John Daly, competing for Long Island, opened a 166-point lead on Andrew Torge of Western in the men’s decathlon after the first of two days of competition. Daly, who placed first in the 100-meter dash, the long jump, high jump and 400-meter dash, tallied 3,425 points. His worst showing was in the shot put where he came in seven.

Plattsburgh’s Greg Wisser, whose best effort was a third in the shot put, stands sixth with 2,619 points midway through the 10-event competition. Wisser, who was fifth in the high jump, seventh in the long jump and eighth in the 400 meters, is 229 points out of third. He got off to a slow start with a ninth in the 100-meter dash.



Sporn reaches final

Saranac Lake’s Hannah Sporn placed second in her heat to reach the finals of the Scholastic Women’s 400-meter intermediate hurdles. Sporn’s time of 1:08.21 was fifth best of the eight qualifiers.

Matt Medeiros, of Saranac, just missed a medal in the Men’s Open 3,000-meter steeplechase. He placed fourth in 10 minutes, 3.30 seconds, finishing 5½ seconds out of third.

In swimming, Malone’s Julie Haynes came in 15th in the Open Women’s 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:32.87.



Goldsmith, Bero star on ice

Lyon Mountain’s Jamie Goldsmith scored twice while Salmon River standout Alley Bero scored one goal and assisted on another as Adirondack skated to a 3-1 victory over Western in Women’s Scholastic Division ice hockey. Taylor Puckhaber, Lake Placid, was credited with an assist while goaltender Carly Dominick Sobol, also of Lake Placid, came up with 31 saves. She lost her shutout when Jilian Cardella scored with 23 seconds to play.



Men win in soccer

In Open Men’s soccer, Nick Southworth’s goal lifted Adirondack to a 1-0 win over Long Island. Kevin Mellon of Lake Placid is a member of the Adirondack team. Adirondack also defeated Long Island, 1-0, in Scholastic Men’s soccer. Chazy’s Nolan Ryan is a member of the team.

The women’s volleyball teams did not fare so well. In Scholastic Women’s play, Central defeated Adirondack, 25-19, 25-20, 15-9, and Western beat Adirondack, 29-27, 25-19, 15-11. Beekmantown’s Rosi Cummings is on the Adirondack team.

In the Women’s Open Division, Western turned back Adirondack, 25-11, 25-23, 15-8, and Long Island topped Adirondack, 26-24, 25-17, 15-9. Former Beekmantown teammates Kaylen Fessette and Lindsey Wilfore play for Adirondack.
