SOUTH PLATTSBURGH — Some of the heaviest hitters in DIRTcar Modified racing will invade Airborne Speedway tonight for the Big Block/Small Block 40-lap special event that offers valuable points to Super DIRT Series competitors and has also been designated as a Syracuse Super DIRT week 358-Modified qualifier.
Defending Airborne Ernie’s Tools Modified champion Mike Bruno of Castleton, Vt., while receiving his second-place trophy after Saturday’s Durocher Auto main event, predicted that the locals will stack up just fine against the likes of Danny Johnson of Rochester, Frank Cozze of Wind Gap, Pa., Kenny Tremont of West Sand Lake and Chuck Hossfeld of Ransomville.
“We’ve got some guys that get around here pretty good and we’ve got a lot of experience here,” Bruno reasoned. “I think we’re going to give them all they want.”
“I’m hoping we can keep that big prize right here,” said Saturday night winner George Foley of Saranac Lake. “The draw (for qualifying heat starting positions) will make a difference probably, but we’re going to go all out.”
Hossfeld, who has a wealth of experience on asphalt in a NASCAR Whelen Tour Modified, will substitute for previously announced Bobby Santos III of Franklin, Mass., who has testing commitments for Bill Davis’s Nextel Cup team.
In Tremont’s last appearance at Airborne, he won the 75-lap season finale after a lengthy duel with Foley. Johnson, a five-time Mr. Dirt champion and one of the all-time Modified win leaders, has never raced on the Airborne asphalt half-mile.
Airborne’s US Army Warriors and Monster energy Bombers will also be in action. Post time is 7:30.
Admission is $15 for adults and $3 for children 6-12.
