Mariners win with flair for dramatic

PLATTSBURGH — There was no shortage of drama Saturday night at Lefty Wilson Field.

Dylan Lashway hit a booming three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to power the Mariners to an exciting 10-6 victory over the Brockville Bunnies in the Alex Turner Memorial Tournament.

The Mariners, behind the pitching of Kris Chase, carried a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning. But Brockville put together a six-run inning powered by Matt Wing’s two-out, three-run homer to send the game to extra innings.

Pat Shaughnessy, who picked up the victory in relief, finished the seventh inning and threw two scoreless innings in a gutsy performance to shut the door for the Mariners.

“Shaughnessy did a great job for us. He kept us tied and our sticks came through in the end,” Dylan Lashway said.

It could have been very easy for the Mariners to put their heads down and give up after squandering a six-run lead, but they stayed behind each other and came through with a moral-boosting win.

“We showed a lot of heart tonight,” Mariners head coach Sam Lashway said. “Tonight (Saturday) showed how far we have come as a team. We are growing on each other.”

The Mariners jumped on the board in the second inning on Justin Besaw’s RBI ground-out to put them up 1-0. They added to the lead with two runs in the fourth. Shaughnessy rapped an RBI single, and Chase an RBI ground-out on a hit-and-run.

Nick Furnia then put what looked like the finishing touches on the Bunnies in the sixth inning with a two-out, bases-clearing double to make the score 6-0.

“We played good baseball all day. We hit, pitched and played great defensively,” Sam Lashway said. “It’s too bad we had to win it in extra innings, because Kris (Chase) pitched a great ball game and deserved a win.”

Chase was excellent. He surrendered just six hits over 6 1/3 innings, and he was able to work away from three straight innings in which he surrendered a leadoff single. He threw the ball harder than he has all year, and his off speed stuff was devastating.

“Our pitching continues to be solid,” said Lashway. “All our pitchers have been able to step up and get us the outs we need.”

It’s been a question all year long of who is going to step up in the clutch for the Mariners. Saturday night it was Lashway. It comes as no surprise, though, because Lashway hit over .600 in high school. The three-run blast put the finishing touches on a three-hit game, and a five-hit day.

“That was a big homer at a big time,” Sam Lashway said. “Dylan (Lashway) has been hitting the ball hard lately and the homer couldn’t have come at a better time.”

Furnia also had three hits and three RBI for the Mariners, who improved to 14-11 overall. Andrew Price and Shaughnessy had two hits, while Besaw and Goldfarb each drove in a run.

Mariners 13, Norfolk 3

Matt LaMora tossed six excellent innings to lead the Mariners past Norfolk Post #925, 13-3, in their first game of the day.

Clinton County scored two runs in five of the seven innings in a nine-hit attack. They also had a three-run fourth inning.

Shaughnessy, who hit a home run on the game’s first pitch, finished with three hits and two RBI. Besaw pounded out two doubles for the Mariners, and Lashway two singles.

“We did all things we wanted to do, and we did them right,” Sam Lashway said. “This game was an all around team effort and everyone was able to get involved.”

Nick Fortune tossed a scoreless seventh inning in relief. And, once again, the Mariners played excellent defensively to back up a strong start from LaMora.

“Our defense makes us go. We have been solid lately and that’s how you win game,” said Lashway.

In other action, Brockville topped Malone, 7-1, before Malone topped Ticonderoga, 20-9, in a slugfest.

Brockville turns

triple play

In the second game of the day, Malone had runners on first and second with no one out. Brockville induced a ground ball to third base, in which the third baseman tagged third, threw to second for two and on to first for the first ever triple play in the history of the Alex Turner Tournament.
