GRANVILLE — The Clinton County Mariners responded with their backs to the wall Sunday by getting to the championship game of the Granville American Legion Baseball Tournament.
But, in the final, Mike Jones homered and drove in six runs to lead the tourney hosts to a 12-5 win over the Mariners.
Earlier in the day, Clinton County recorded a 9-4 victory over Addison County.
Against Addison County, Will Flynn went the first six innings to get the pitching win.
“This was a game we had to win and Will pitched great,” said Mariners head coach John Flynn. “He struck out nine.”
Pat Shaughnessy led the Mariners’ 10-hit attack with three hits, while Matt Leta and Nick Lamica each added two, with Lamica getting a double. Tory Bouyea chipped in with a triple.
“Overall, it was a good game for us,” Flynn said. “I was happy with the team’s intensity.”
Then, in the title game against Granville, the Mariners trailed only, 5-4, when the hosts scored six runs in the sixth inning to break it open.
“We fought back to get to within 5-4,” Flynn said. “We played hard, but just couldn’t get it done.”
Bouyea rapped out four hits, including two doubles, for Clinton County, while Leta added three more hits and Lamica, a triple.
“It was still a good weekend for us — we made it to the finals,” Flynn said.
The Mariners (11-7 overall) play the Champlain Valley Baseball League All-Stars on Wednesday night.
