PLATTSBUGH -- The Clinton County Mariners American Legion baseball team got back into the swing of things Thursday with a 6-3 victory over the Meron's/Renzi's Expos of the Champlain Valley Baseball League at Chip Cummings Field.
The Mariners improved their overall record to 8-5, including an 8-1 mark with aluminum bats.
Nick Lamica and Pat Shaughnessy hit triples for the Mariners, with Lamica finishing with two hits.
"We swung the bats well against some quality pitching and we played good defense," said Mariners head coach John Flynn. "We got contributions from a number of players."
Clinton County used four pitchers -- Matt Lamora for two innings, Aaron Tenbuuren for one, Alex LaFountain for two and Joe Kirkpatrick for two. Brett Bosley was the Mariners' catcher.
"We hadn't played in a while and we did some good things leading into the weekend," Flynn said. "It was a good game for us."
The Expos scored all their runs in the first inning on a three-run double by Mike Bergman.
Craig Bujold pitched two innings for Meron's/Renzi's, followed by Josh Powers, Bergman, Matt Rivers, Joey Painter and Billy Davis for one apiece. Kyle Kowalowski and Diavalo Fletcher shared the catching duties.
The Mariners will be competing in the Granville American Legion Tournament this weekend.
There are eight teams entered and Clinton County is in a four-team division that includes the Champlain Edge, T.C. Eagles (formerly South Glens Falls) and Addison County.
Saturday, the Mariners play the Champlain Edge at noon and then the T.C. Eagles at 4:30 p.m.
Sunday, Clinton County opposes Addison County at 9 a.m., with the tournament championship game set for 2 p.m.
"We're looking to get back on track," Flynn said. "Lamica and Shaughnessy won't pitch this weekend and we're going with our young guns."
