COLCHESTER, Vt. — It was a better performance for the Clinton County Mariners American Legion baseball team as this year's Winooski Insurance Wooden Wars Tournament.
The Mariners (7-6 overall) finished off a 2-2 weekend with Sunday's 5-3 victory over Orange, Conn.
"Last year, we finished in 10th place," said Mariners head coach John Flynn. "This year, we finished third in our division and won our crossover game with the other division."
Clinton County scored all five of its' runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Jordan Keysor singled, Pat Shaughnessy walked, Frank Buksa singled, Eric Rock singled in a run, Will Flynn put down a suicide-squeeze bunt for another run, Kyle Rascoe reached on a fielder's choice with a runner coming across and Casey Letourneau singled in a run.
"They were a good team, but we got the early jump on them with the five runs," Flynn said.
The five runs would be all Mariners starter Matt Seymour would need as he went the distance for the win.
He struck out six, walked two and scattered eight hits.
"Seymour pitched great," Flynn said. "He started to tire some in the sixth when he gave up two runs and then gave up one in the seventh. But, he wanted to stay in there and finish the game. He was able to gut it out."
The Mariners ended up with seven hits, with Will Flynn the lone Clinton County player to get two.
"We swung the wood bats well," John Flynn said. "We hit the ball well — we hit some shots right at people. And, we struck out only three times in the game."
The Mariners' next game is scheduled for Wednesday when their play at the Ticonderoga Legion.
