10 YEARS AGO (1999)
Peru freshman Matt King shoots a 156 for 36 holes to score a 6-stroke victory over Plattsburgh High's Eric LaRocque and Tupper Lake's Jason Fuller in the Section VII golf championships at Westport. PHS wins the team title.
Brian Reinisch pitches a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts in Lake Placid's 7-0 win over Chazy. Jeff Hodges leads the Blue Bombers with a triple and 2 singles.
Vanessa Garcia claims 4 firsts to lead the Peru girls to the Section VII Class B track & field championship. Emily Lazzari, Angie Aubin and Jenna Buesser lead AuSable Valley to the Class C-D crown.
Peru, led by Ryan Wrisley, edges Beekmantown by 3 points to win the boys' Class B track title while Jason Woodard and Duane Crammond pace Ti to the Class C-D championship.
20 YEARS AGO (1989)
Eric Gibson pitches a 2-hitter with 12 strikeouts and Gary Boulerice bangs out 3 hits in Northern Adirondack's 9-0 win over Moriah.
Joe Bodenrader, Jeff Way, Brent Shook and Mark Stevens lead Peru to its fourth straight Section VII boys' track championship, surprising CVACc champ PHS and host Saranac Lake.
Tammy Rule, Cassie McIntyre and Kristy and Krista Allen lead AuSable Valley to the girls' track crown. Ticonderoga's Kellie Grinnell sweeps the hurdles and wins the long jump.
Northeastern Clinton's Matt Mero wins the Section VII tennis singles title while Turi Aytur and Craig Heins capture the doubles in leading PHS to the team championship.
25 YEARS AGO (1984)
Al D'Lano cards a two-under 142 score for 36 holes to win the Memorial Day Tournament at Bluff Point Golf & Country Club. Brian Raville, with a 134, posts the low net.
Tom Brown wins the singles and John Garrant and Ron Cao-Ba claim the doubles as PHS ends Northeastern Clinton's four-year reign over Section VII tennis.
Beekmantown's Sue Klein sweeps the 800, 1,500 and 3,000 in the Section VII track championships while teammate Michele Provost sets a section record of 26.7 seconds in the 200-meter dash. Kathy Roach of St. John's breaks the shot-put record with a throw of 35 feet, 7 inches.
Karen Gruendling hurls Peru past Saranac, giving the Indians their fifth consecutive CVAC Div. I title in softball. Vera Bertoli raps out 3 hits for Peru.
30 YEARS AGO (1979)
Steve Mildon, hobbled by an ankle injury, pitches a no-hitter in his first start of the season as Crown Point beats Chazy 7-0. Vince Villemaire only allows 4 hits while striking out 14, but is hurt by 8 Chazy errors.
Willsboro's Dave Lee tosses a 5-hit shutout in beating defending MVAC champion Schroon Lake.
Bernard Granger leads Ticonderoga to the Section VII boys' track championship while PHS, with a sweep of the 4 relays, wins the girls' title. Peru's Brian Aikens is the meet's lone triple winner.
Tina Sweatt collects 3 hits, including a grand slam, to lead Willsboro to a 9-8 win over Elizabethtown-Lewis, clinching the MVAC North softball title for Willsboro.
40 YEARS AGO (1969)
Plattsburgh High's Larry Pasti upsets AuSable Valley's Dave LaFountain to win the Section VII tennis singles title, while Mike Dodds and Roman Lopez win doubles to give the Patriots the team championship.
Sprinter Sol Irving and Norwegian foreign-exchange student Odd Shoning (440) lead Peru to the Section VII track & field championship. The Indians' Jerry Ameral and Ed Rigsby tie for first in the 880-yard run.
Crown Point's Len Woods comes within one out of a no-hitter in a 1-0 victory over Elizabethtown-Lewis. John Engleston's 2-out single in the 7th ends the bid. Earl Sawyer doubles and scores on Dave Towne's single for the game's only run.
Chuck Dragoon pitches 6 innings of no-hit ball before settling for a 2-hit shutout in Plattsburgh High's 6-0 win over Queensbury. Dale McNally goes 3-for-4 for the Hornets while Mike Bleau is robbed of a home run when his blast strikes a wire strung between light poles and the ball falls for a ground-rule double.
50 YEARS AGO (1959)
Tom Betrus belts a home run while Charlie Turek tosses a 2-hitter in Mineville's 7-3 victory over Moriah.
Jimmy Duprey pitches a 2-hitter to lead Peru past Keeseville 3-2.
Westport, behind the two-hit pitching of Doug Anson and 4 RBI from Eddie James, beats Willsboro 5-0 to wrap up the MVL baseball title and run its remarkable record of varsity sports victories to 31, dating back to soccer season.
60 YEARS AGO (1949)
Jim Brown, Tom Haley, Bob Gendron and Jim McNally of Plattsburgh High set a state record for the 880-yard relay with a time of 1:35.2.
Jim Fagan pitches a 5-hitter to lead St. John's to a 7-2 victory over St. Joseph's of Malone. Walt Poupore has 2 hits for the Purple Tide.
Chet Cleland pitches a 3-hitter with 12 strikeouts as Plattsburgh High defeats MAI 9-1 to wrap up the North Country League title in baseball.
Corron pitches a 4-hitter and Robbins collects a triple, double and a single in Mooers 16-4 victory over St. Mary's of Champlain.
70 YEARS AGO (1939)
Vin Jerry pitches PHS to a 6-5 win over MAI, its first victory over the Mount in baseball in 8 years.
Milton Rockwell, Edward Ransom, Stanley Bourdeau and Bob Carr all hit home runs as the Beavers defeat the East Side Sluggers 15-11 in junior baseball.
