MVAC recognizes hoop stars

The Mountain Valley Athletic Conference basketball all-stars for the 2008-09 season have been announced.

Boys
Division I

MOST valuable player

Ethan Tyrrell, Schroon Lake — Tyrrell averaged 20.9 points per game and helped bring Schroon Lake (15-8) a Division I title and an appearance in the Class D semifinal game. He finished the season with 439, allowing him to finish his high school career with more than 1,000 points.Tyrrell was co-MVP last season as a junior.

Alex Hamel, Willsboro — Hamel, a sophomore, averaged a team-high 13.5 points per game for the Warriors (6-15) and helped them advance to the Class D quarterfinals.

Lucas Strong, Willsboro — Strong, a junior, scored 197 points this season, credited with 65 field goals and 35 free throws. He was second-best in points per game average for Willsboro with 9.4 points.

Shea Howley, Chazy — Howley, a junior, averaged a team-best 11.3 points per game for the Eagles, who finished 3-14. He scored a season-high 26 points in a one point win over Willsboro.

Brendan Bush, Schroon Lake — Bush, a junior, was the second-leading scorer for the Wildcats with a points-per-game average of 10.9. He scored a season-high 20 points in an early season loss to Westport.

Evan Drew, Elizabethtown-Lewis — Drew, a junior, averaged 9.6 points per game for the Lions (3-11), good for second best on the team. He scored a season-high 18 points in a loss to Crown Point.

Division II
Most valuable player

Nathan Gay, Westport — Gay, a junior, averaged a team-high 17.9 points per game for the Eagles. Gay helped lead Westport (19-2) to its second-straight Section VII Class D crown and the Eagles advanced to the Class D state quarterfinals. The Eagles were ranked as high as fifth in the Class D state rankings. Gay was named to the MVAC first team last season.

Bo McKinley, Westport — McKinley, a sophomore, was the second-leading scorer for Westport with 14.4 points per game and hit a team-high 45 3-pointers. He scored a game-high 17 points in the Section VII Class D championship win over Moriah. McKinley was named to the MVAC first team last season.

Ben Gaddy, Bolton — Gaddy, a senior, scored 294 points for the season and averaged a team-high 15.5 points per game. Gaddy helped the Eagles (9-10) advance to the Section VII Class D quarterfinals. He scored a game-high 24 points in a 60-50 win over Keene in the first round.

John Budwick Jr., Crown Point — Budwick, a junior, averaged a team-best 18.2 points per game for the Panthers, who advanced to the Section VII Class D quarterfinals. Budwick scored a season-high 30 in the first game of the season, a 70-44 win over Keene. He also had 10 double-doubles. Budwick was named to the MVAC second team last season.

Cody Whitney, Keene — Whitney, a junior, averaged a team-high 11.3 points per game for the Beavers (5-14), who advanced to the Section VII Class D quarterfinals.

Curtis Mead, Westport — Mead, a senior, finished the season with 137 points and was credited with 60 field goals and 27 free throws. Mead was named to the MVAC second team last season.

Division III
Most valuable player

Nick McCarroll, Johnsburg — McCarroll, a senior, averaged 8.8 points per game for the Jaguars (16-4), who advanced to the Section VII Class D quarterfinals. He scored a season-high 18 in a 48-27 win over Minverva-Newcomb.

Jeff Reynolds, Indian Lake/Long Lake — Reynolds, a senior, led Division III with a 17.9 points per game average and also made 41 3-pointers. He helped the Orange (15-4) advance to the Section VII Class D semifinals. Reynolds finished his high school career with more than 1,000 points scored.

Kris Bain, Indian Lake/Long Lake — Bain, a junior, averaged 13.6 points per game, good for second on the team. He was the third-leading scorer in Division III.

Kevin Yandon, Minerva Newcomb — Yandon, a senior, averaged 16.3 points per game, good for second in Division III and first for the Mountaineers (5-10).

Rob Fish, Wells — Fish, a senior, led the Indians with an average of 9.8 points per game. He scored a season-high 22 points in a December win over Keene.

Josh Harvey, Johnsburg — Harvey, a senior, averaged 7.4 points per game for the Jaguars. He scored a season-high 16 in a December win over Keene.

Girls
Division I

Most valuable player

Ashley Sherman, Willsboro — Sherman, a senior, averaged a team-best 11.8 points per game for the Warriors and made 26 3-pointers, also a team high. Sherman helped Willsboro advance to the Section VII Class D title game for the first time in 26 years. Sherman made the MVAC second team last season.

Riley Diemand, Elizabethtown-Lewis —Diemand, a senior, led the Lions (10-7) in scoring average per game with 14.9, helping her team advance to the Section VII Class D quarterfinals. Diemand was named to the MVAC second team last season.

Kelsey Gibson, Elizabethtown-Lewis —Gibson, also a senior, was second behind Diemond in points per game average with 10.2. Gibson hit a team-high 11 3-pointers. Gibson was named to the MVAC first team last season.

Ashley Whitty, Schroon Lake — Whitty, a junior, averaged a team-high 15.1 points per game for the Wildcats (14-5) and helped them advance to the Section VII Class D semifinals. In that game, a loss to Westport, Whitty scored 22 of her teams' 29 points. Whitty was named to the MVAC first team last season.

Jennifer Murphy, Willsboro —Murphy, a senior, averaged 10.1 points per game for the Warriors, second-best on the team. Murphy scored a season-high 23 points — the most by any Warrior in any single game this season — in a loss to Schroon Lake in February.

Stephanie Pepper, Chazy —Pepper, a senior, led her team in scoring with 164 points, good for an average of 9.8 points per game. Pepper scored a season-high 19 points for Chazy (6-13) in a loss to Chateaugay in December.

Division II
Most valuable player

Martha McKinley, Westport — McKinley went from MVAC first teamer last season to the Division II MVP this season as she led Westport (17-7) to a Section VII Class D title and an appearance in the Class D quarterfinals. She averaged 7.1 points per game, good for second on the team. McKinley leads four Westport players named to the all-star team.

Emma Nye, Keene — Nye, a junior, was the Beavers' (6-15) leading scorer and floor general. She finished with 377 points and was top on the team in points per game average with 19.8. That was also the top scoring average in the area.

Jessica Potter, Crown Point —Potter, a junior, was the Panthers' leading scorer, averaging 16.5 points per game. Potter also averaged 10 rebounds and four blocks per game. She twice scored a season-high 23 points in a game, the second coming in Crown Points' (2-10) final game, a loss to Bolton.

Sarah Gibbs, Westport —Gibbs, a senior, was Westport's leading scorer with an average of 7.5 points per game and 166 for the season. She scored a season-high 18 in a 51-16 win over Wells in February.

Willa McKinley, Westport —McKinley, a freshman, is the youngest of all players on both the boys' and girls' all-star teams. She scored 126 points and averaged 5.7 per game. Three times she scored a season-high of 11 points, the last coming in the Section VII Class D title game win against Willsboro.

Rebecca White, Westport —White, a senior, scored 127 points this season and hit a team-leading 11 shots from behind the arc. She scored a season-high 12 points in a win over Chazy in January.

Division III
Most valuable player

Carli Reynolds, Indian Lake/Long Lake —Reynolds, a junior, led the Orange in scoring with an average of 16.3 points per game and was Division III's leading scorer. She helped Indian Lake/Long Lake (17-5) advance to the Section VII Class D semifinal game. Five times Reynolds eclipsed 20 points in a game, the highest being 26 scored in a season-opening win over Willsboro.

Allison Pine, Indian Lake/Long Lake —Pine, a sophomore, was the second-leading scorer for the Orange with 125 points scored for the season. She scored a season-high 16 in the Section VII Class D semifinal game loss to Willsboro.

Elizabeth Hamdan, Indian Lake/Long Lake — Hamdan, a junior, scored 110 points for the Orange, third-best on the team. She scored a season-high 16 in a February win over Crown Point.

Emily Bolan, Minerva/Newcomb —Bolan, a senior, averaged 6.4 points per game for the Huskies (4-8). She scored a season-high 14 points in a January win over Johnsburg.

Kelsey Williford, Johnsburg — Williford, a junior, was the second-leading scorer in Division III, averaging 11.3 points per game. She scored a season-high 18 points twice for Johnsburg (1-14), the latest coming in a January loss to Westport.

Steph Page, Wells —Page, a senior, averaged 6.2 points per game for the Indians (3-9). She scored a season-high 15 points in a loss to Canajoharie in December.
