PLATTSBURGH — Hudson Valley Community College limited Clinton CC to five hits Tuesday in posting a 11-0, 4-1 doubleheader sweep in junior-college baseball.
Mike Tietjen pitched a one-hit shutout with six strikeouts and no walks in the opener while three HVCC pitchers combined on a four-hitter in the nightcap.
"We misplayed a couple of balls in the first inning of the opener and that kind of set the tone," Clinton CC Coach Tom Neale said. "The second game was well-played by both sides. We played well; I'm not happy that we lost. But we played like we did earlier in the season."
Hudson Valley (15-6) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first in Game 1 and preceded to tack on 5 more runs over the next two innings. The Vikings rapped out 11 hits with Mike McCrone clubbing a two-run homer and three players adding two-base hits.
Cody Weaver singled to right with one out in the first for Clinton's lone hit.
Matt Brown, who was relieved by Tyler Trombley in the fifth, was tagged with the loss.
Weaver went the distance in the second game, scattering seven hits while limiting HVCC to two runs through six innings. McCrone's two-out, two-run single in the top of the seventh gave the Vikings some insurance.
"Cody Weaver pitched an exceptional game for us," Neale stressed.
"We had our chances — we had the bases loaded with no one out in the fifth and down only 2-0, but couldn't score."
Bobby Piser, the second of three Vikings pitchers, snuffed out the rally with a comebacker to the mound, a pop-up and a strikeout.
In the sixth, Dustin Currier, who had two of Clinton's four hits, singled in Cory Davidson, who had reached on an error and stole second.
Clinton fell to 3-9 with the twin setbacks.
The two teams meet again on Thursday in Troy for two.
