Cardinals garner top honors

PLATTSBURGH — State University of New York Athletic Conference honors continue to roll in for the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team.

A day after having five of their players chosen for All-SUNYAC First Team honors in an unprecedented accomplishment, the Cardinals received two more awards Thursday when sophomore goaltender Bryan Hince was selected as the 2008-09 Herb Hammond Most Valuable Player in the conference and Bob Emery as Coach of the Year by his peers.

Hince finished the SUNYAC regular season with a 13-0-1 record and a .937 save percentage. The sophomore earned Goaltender of the Week honors in the conference seven times this season.

For the season, Hince has compiled a 20-1-2 record, a 1.68 goals-against average, four shutouts and a .932 save percentage.

"I'm proud of Bryan," Emery said. "I've never coached a player so tough on himself and that's what makes him so competitive.

"He's always trying to get better and I'm not surprised that he was chosen as Player of the Year as a sophomore."

Emery coached Plattsburgh State to a 15-0-1 record during the SUNYAC regular season and the top-ranked Cardinals currently have a 22-1-2 overall record.

This marks the fifth time Emery has been selected as Coach of the Year in the SUNYAC.

"This is a team award and also one for our entire coaching staff of Steve Moffat, Jeff Wood and Gregg Fesette," Emery said.

"Steve Moffat is the main reason for the kind of year we are having because of his rapport with the players and how hard he works."

Plattsburgh State hosts Brockport in a SUNYAC Tournament semifinal on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Stafford Ice Arena.

Oswego freshman forward Eric Selleck was chosen as the SUNYAC's Rookie of the Year.
