PLATTSBURGH — Andrea Maynard set a pace last week that few athletes would dare to attempt.
The Seton Catholic senior took two firsts in the Section VII Indoor Track & Field Championships a week ago Saturday and immediately after, boarded a plane to Nicaragua as a volunteer worker in the North Country Mission of Hope.
Maynard then left Nicaragua at 4 a.m. Friday, arriving at 4 a.m. Saturday in Plattsburgh. She then competed in the state qualifier in indoor track, earning a spot on the Section VII team in the 600-meter run and the 3,200-meter relay.
And, as if that wasn't enough, Maynard headed to Paul Smiths Sunday where she captured a silver medal in Empire Games snowshoeing.
It was back to school Monday with plenty to tell about how she spent her week's vacation.
The Seton Catholic standout was one of several athletes to qualify for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championships to be held March 7 at Cornell University in Ithaca.
Saranac, with 11 boys and girls, will send the largest delegation to the state meet with Nate Williams and Jason Pageau qualifying in three events each.
Seton Catholic is next with 10 athletes. Michael Champagne, Zach Ziemer, Genna Hartung, Anna Rabideau, Alexa Cosgro and Maynard each earned two tickets to the state meet.
Ticonderoga has eight representatives with Devin Scott, Lexi Reale and Ainsley MacAlpine doubling up for the Sentinels.
Beekmantown and Peru each have six state qualifiers with Josh Garren of the Eagles and Rachel Danis, Megan Black and Ashley Leta of the Indians making it in two events.
AuSable Valley, with Josh Ashline a two-time qualifier, has five going to Ithaca while Plattsburgh High will send two, including Alexis Harrington, who earned two places.
Sprinter Corrine Becker will be Saranac Lake's lone competitor.
