CLINTONVILLE — Beekmantown, fresh off clinching the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference championship on Wednesday night, will look to defend its title today at the Section VII Wrestling Championships at AuSable Valley Central School.
The Eagles will have four top seeds — Jesse Daniels (119 pounds), Koby Barcomb (135), Andy Anderson (145) and Nick Bushey (160).
The opening round of the event begins at noon, with the semifinals at 1 p.m. Consolation matches for third and fourth place will be at 3:30 p.m., with the championship matches scheduled for approximately 4:30 p.m.
CVAC runner-up Peru and Saranac also have four top seeds.
Jacob Goddeau (96), Arik Robinson (103), Troy Seymour (112) and Cameron Mello (285) led the way for the Indians, while Ryan Guynup (130), Dakota Smart (140), Adam Ahern (189) and Tyler Leavine (215) are top seeds for the Chiefs.
Northern Adirondack's Ty Herbest (125) and James Charland (152), along with AuSable Valley's John Dukett (171) complete the list of top-seeded grapplers.
Seven wrestlers in the field have won sectional championships.
Peru's Robinson, at 103, is a two-time sectional champion and a returning NYSPHSAA champion last season.
Beekmantown's Daniels, the top seed at 119, is the defending 103-pound champion from last year. Peru's Patrick Hogan, who is also at 119, is the defending 119-pounder from last season.
Beekmantown's Barcomb will be out to defend his 135-pound title, while Northern Adirondack's James Filion, also at 135, is a two-time sectional champion and former Outstanding Wrestler.
Beekmantown's Anderson, at 145, is a three-time sectional winner and took fourth at the state meet in 2006.
And, at 152, NAC's Charland is a two-time sectional champion who placed fourth at the states last year.
Today's sectionals could prove very interesting as the league had some good balance this season. Beekmantown ended up beating Peru twice, while Northern Adirondack handed the Eagles their lone loss in the CVAC.
