Three-goal second period lifts PHS

SARANAC LAKE — Plattsburgh High School scored three goals within a 1:04 span late in the second period Wednesday night and skated to a 3-2 victory over Saranac Lake in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference hockey.

The Red Storm (11-10-3, 4-4-2) held a 1-0 lead on Logan McDougall's power-play goal at 8:20 of the opening stanza.

But that lead was erased when the Hornets (11-9-3, 4-3-2) got three quick ones. Brett Burdo tallied a power-play goal at 11:54 of the second, Russell Merrill a power-play marker at 12:24 and Brendon Cortright an even-strength goal at 12:58 to make it 3-1 in favor of Plattsburgh.

Eighth-grader Matt Phelan tallied his first varsity goal 1:32 into the third to cut Saranac Lake's deficit to one. The Red Storm, however, couldn't get the equalizer.

Saranac Lake finished with a 29-19 shot advantage, with Brandon Bechard making 27 saves in net for the Hornets and Dana Tarantelli 16 stops for the Red Storm.

"We had some other chances to score in the first period, but weren't able to get the puck past Bechard," said Saranac Lake head coach Will Ellsworth. "Then we ran into some penalty problems and had the lapse in the second."
