BEEKMANTOWN — When defending Champlain Valley Athletic Conference wrestling champion Beekmantown lost to Northern Adirondack early this season, it looked like the Eagles would be hard pressed to defend their crown.
Beekmantown, however, pulled together and won its next seven league matches, including a 38-34 decision over Peru Wednesday night to wrap up the championship.
"It was a packed house and a great match to watch," said Beekmantown head coach Lenny Gadway. "I knew it was going to be tight, and our kids wrestled up to their potential.
"The kids improved tremendously from the beginning of the season. They responded to the challenge and did a nice job."
Both the Eagles and Indians took 6-1 records into Wednesday's showdown, with Beekmantown having defeated Peru earlier in the season.
Brandon Jabaut's win by fall at 215 pounds clinched it for the Eagles, who took a 38-28 lead at the time.
Also winning by pin for Beekmantown was Nick Bushey (171), while Jesse Daniels (119), Kyle Burdick (125), Ethan Kerr (130), Koby Barcomb (135), Kyle LaPorte (140) and Nick Lucia (160) all won by decision. Andy Anderson (145) won by forfeit.
"There were quite a few good matches," Gadway said. "We won a big match at 119 and both 135 and 160 were also nice wins for us."
Daniels recorded a 4-1 win over Peru's Patrick Hogan at 119 in a battle of standouts.
"That match was a reversal from the first time we wrestled them when we lost, 4-2," Gadway said.
At 135, Barcomb posted an 11-6 win over Kyle Rock. And, at 160, Lucia was an 11-8 winner over Kyle Lovejoy.
Arik Robinson (103), Josh D'Aust (189) and Cameron Mello (285) led the way for the Indians with pins.
Adam Stickle (152) won by decision, while Jake Goddeau (96) and Troy Seymour (112) picked up forfeit victories.
