PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh High School volleyball team didn't have to work this hard in the regular season in defeating Saranac twice.
But Wednesday night, the Chiefs presented a big problem before the Hornets recorded a 3-2 win to advance to the Section VII Class B finals. Plattsburgh won by game scores of 25-13, 27-29, 25-19, 19-25, 25-19.
"We escaped," said PHS head coach Victoria McMillen. "It was a dogfight and Saranac came to play. This was, by far, the toughest they have played us this season.
"We went up 13-1 in the first game, but they didn't quit."
The Hornets prevailed behind some strong play from Kayla Hoopes, who finished with 13 kills, and sophomore Olivia Harrigan, who added 11.
"Harrigan is really coming into her own at outside hitter and worked well alongside Kayla tonight at the net," said McMillan.
Roshell Gist contributed 22 points and Carly Fisher 18 points for Hornets, while Brittany Bracale added 20 assists, Ashley Menard 16 assists, Ashley Rebideau 19 digs, Josella Gist nine kills and Hannah Emery, 13 points.
Kayla Nason and Kelli Jock led the way for the Chiefs. Nason had seven points, 15 kills and 10 digs, while Jock added five kills and was strong at the net.
"Nason was unbelievable with her kills," McMillan said. "And Jock gave us fits at the net."
Jamie Frenyea contributed 11 points and 17 digs, Rachel Leitsch 12 points, 13 assists and 11 digs, Kim Plumadore 12 assists and Victoria Hutti nine points for the Chiefs.
The Hornets will tangle for the Class B championship on Saturday against Beekmantown at 2:30 p.m. at Plattsburgh State.
