CANTON — Franklin Academy's championship showing in the Section X Indoor Track & Field Championships was doubly sweet.
The Malone girls overcame a strong effort by South Jefferson, the regular season co-champion, to win by 26½ points while the boys prevailed by 27 points at St. Lawrence University Friday night.
The girls won only two events — the 55-meter hurdles and 800-meter relay), but claimed second places in 12 of the 14 events.
"Almost every team member had a personal best in at least one event," Girls' Coach Bob Devins said. "I was very proud of the improvement and work ethic this team displayed this season. Our senior leadership was the key to our success. It has been a pleasure to coach this team."
The Huskies had been inconsistent in the field events, but Ellen Studlack (4 feet, 8 inches) took third in the high jump with teammate Corinne Williams (4-foot-6) finishing sixth — both with personal-bests.
In the 1,500 meters, Malone scored 11 points with Kaylie Lamica, Paige Studlack and Jennifer Kemp all running outstandin races and in the 600 meters, Danielle Dumas and Christine ran personal-bests to place second and third.
The 300-meter dash also was a big event for Malone with Jessica Farmer, Kylee Disotelle and Kaitlin Sexton all producing personal-bests to score 13 points, which put the Huskies in front to stay.
Disotelle also won the 55-meter hurdles in 9.6 seconds while the foursome of Disotelle, Farmer, Hanna and Sexton took the 800 relay in 1:55.6.
The Malone boys were led by Justin Marlow, who won the 55-meter hurdles in a school-record time of 8.2 seconds. Marlow returned to win the 1,000 meters with a personal-best 2:45.2, and finished the night by running in the 800 relay, where the Huskies set a new school record. The team of Derek Hanna, Zach Leffler, Nick Hyde and Marlow won in 1:37.6.
Ed Watkins won the shot put with a throw of 46 feet, 6 inches — more than two feet beyond his previous best.
