PLATTSBURGH — The Saranac girls extended their run to nine straight titles while Ticonderoga restored order in boys' track & field Saturday at the Section VII Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Saranac is undoubtedly the team of the century in girls' indoor track. The girls won their ninth in a row with relative ease, finishing 41 points in front of runner-up Seton Catholic.
Ticonderoga, meanwhile, reclaimed the boys' title it surrendered two years ago with a 14-point victory over second-place Saranac. The Sentinels were working on a three-year reign in 2007 when the Chiefs pulled off an upset. Plattsburgh High won last year, but there was no keeping Ticonderoga off the top spot in 2009.
Ticonderoga's edge came in the field events where the Sentinels won three of four events tallied 61 of their 113 points. Dustin Scott repeated in the high jump with a leap of six feet, two inches, bettering his winning effort of 5-foot-8 in 2008. Scott also won the triple jump with a best of 40 feet, 5½ inches.
Jarryn Granger won the long jump, clearing 20 feet, 6 inches.
The boys' 3,200-meter relay was hotly contested with Seton Catholic's team of Michael Champagne, Seth Bombard, Zach Ziemer and Barrett Waling edging Saranac by just four-tenths of a second in 8:34.6.
Champagne also swept the 1,600 and 3,200 for Seton Catholic.
Beekmantown's Brendan Courneene denied the Knights' a distance sweep by beating Ziemer by three-tenths of a second in the 1,000 meters in 2:48.4.
Saranac's 4x160 relay team of Nate Williams Casey Jackson, Nate Turcotte and Nick Ariele won by two-tenths over Peru in 1:18.6.
Robbi Bailey won the 55-meter hurdles and Rachel Plumley took the shot put to lead the Saranac girls. The Chiefs also won the 1,600-meter relay with a team of Bailey, Melissa Whyman, Katie McIntosh and Kristina Lord.
Genna Hartung was a three-time winner for Seton Catholic, sweeping the 1,000 and 1,500 and also running with the first-plae 3,200-meter relay team. Anna Rabideau, Andrea Maynard and Alexa Cosgro rounded out the team. Rabideau and Mary Glynn finished 1-2 in the 3,000.
Ticonderoga's Lexi Realer won the 55-meter dash and picked up a first in the 640-meter relay.
