CANTON — The Franklin Academy Huskies might be tough to catch after winning their fourth consecutive meet in Northern Athletic Conference boys' indoor track & field Saturday at St. Lawrence University.
In the girls' meet, South Jefferson picked up 39 points in the field events to turn the tables on Franklin Academy of Malone, 112-107. The outcome sets the stage for a showdown between the two schools in the Section X championships Friday. Each has two wins and a tie in head-to-head competition this winter.
The Malone boys continued to show significant improvement in their latest triumph. Ed Watkins won the shot put for the first time this winter with a throw of 44 feet, 8 inches, the best in the section this season. David Aguon surprised with a fourth-place finish in the long jump.
The 800-meter relay team of Justin Marlow, Nick Hyde, Derek Hanna and Zach Leffler finished first in 1:37.8, narrowly missing the school record while winning by more than six seconds. The 3,200- and 1,600-meter relay teams turned in fine efforts with a number of personal-bests.
Justin Marlow stumbled at the start of the 55-meter hurdles, but recovered to finish second with teammate Mike Perry, third. Leffler took second in the 55-meter dash and third in the 600.
The Malone girls also had some personal-bests — Kaylie Lamica (1,500 and 1,600 relay), Justina Cositore (3,200 relay and 1,000) and Danielle Dumas (600 and 1,600 relay). The 1,600-meter relay team, which included Christine Hanna and Ellen Studlack,
finished second in 4:25.8, taking five seconds off its previous best.
Tupper Lake's Charlie Beaudette won the boys' 1,600-meter run in 4:46.6.
