PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh State coach Bob Emery says there are three keys to every game for his team to be successful — getting strong leadership, playing with emotion and playing smart.
The Cardinals satisfied their coach Monday night.
Joey Wilson scored two goals and Plattsburgh State put together a complete effort in a 6-1 non-conference hockey victory over Williams College at the Stafford Ice Arena.
"I have to give the guys kudos," Emery said. "As a coach, you want your team to be ready to play. I don't know who was responsible tonight for the leadership in the locker room before the game — hopefully the entire team.
"But, we came out skating hard and with emotion right from the start and were able to control the game."
The top-ranked Cardinals (17-1-2) scored two goals within a 38-second span midway through the first period to take the lead for good.
Wilson skated around the net and stuffed the puck in at 10:01 and then Kyle Kudroch was the recipient of a pass down low off a two-on-one to make it 2-0 at 10:39.
The Ephs (11-5-2) cut their deficit in half when Matt Masucci scored from the side of the net at 5:53 of the second period when the puck sneaked just inside the near post past Plattsburgh State netminder Bryan Hince.
There wasn't a penalty whistled in the game until the 7:18 mark of the second when Williams ran into some penalty trouble — and paid the price.
Wilson took a pass in the slot and one-timed the puck into the net for a power-play goal at 9:21 to make it 3-1. Then, at 13:18, Dan Sliasis added another power-play goal when he one-timed a pass from the side past Williams goaltender Ryan Purdy from in close.
It stayed 4-1 until Phil Farrow tallied off a two-on-one at 15:20 of the third and then Eric Satim from in close at 17:00 to close out the scoring.
"We were able to keep the puck out by playing smart defense," Emery said. "And, we were able to stay out of the box. You don't have to worry about killing penalties when you don't take any.
"We were able to get the momentum from the start and keep it."
Plattsburgh State doubled Williams in shots on goal, 36-18. Hince stopped 17 of 18 shots for his 15th victory of the season. Purdy, who played all but 4:40 in net for the Ephs, suffered his first loss after winning the first six games of his collegiate career.
"I was concerned about the game going in," Emery said. "This could end up being a big game for us down the road."
The Cardinals return to State University of New York Athletic Conference play this weekend when they host Brockport on Friday and Geneseo on Saturday.
