PLATTSBURGH — The Saranac boys escaped with a narrow victory in the afternoon meet to give the Chiefs a sweep while the Ticonderoga Sentinels dominated the morning competition Saturday in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference indoor track & field.
Saranac, with its depth, tallied 63 points to hold off Beekmantown, 58, and Seton Catholic, 53. Speedster Nate Williams and versatile Jason Pageau again led the Chiefs to victory.
The Saranac girls easily won their meet with 92 points.
The Ticonderoga boys used their strength in the field events to pile up 88½ points with AuSable Valley, second, with 61½. The Sentinels also won the girls' meet with 58 points to Plattsburgh High's 43½.
The afternoon boys' 3,200-meter relay came down to Seton Catholic winning by a half second over Beekmantown. Michael Champagne, Barret Waling, Zach Ziemer and Seth Bombard ran a 9:10.8 to edge Beekmantown's Brendan Courneene, Garrett Peterson and Nick Trombley and Adams Shearer with a 9:11.3.
In the morning competition, AuSable Valley's Josh Giddings, Korey Devins, Patrick Duprey and Austin Davis won in 9:24.7, beating the PHS foursome by a half second.
The Patriots' James Montefusco won the 55-meter dash by one-tenth over three rivals and Ticonderoga's Jonathan Granger edged Montefusco by .04 in the 300.
Dustin Scott, who also won the triple jump, took the high jump with a nice effort of six feet for Ti.
Ticonderoga's Lexi Reale and Saranac Lake's Corinne Becker were both clocked in 7.5 seconds for the 55-meter dash with the nod going to Reale.
Knights at Yale meet
On Jan. 17, Seton Catholic's Michael Champagne and Genna Hartung ran in the Yale University Interscholastic Invitational. Champagne was 22nd out of 260 boys in the 3,200 with a time of 9:09.19. Hartung came in 16 out of 252 irls with an indoor personal-best of 10:27.87.
Hartung's time meets the qualifying standard (10:40) for the Nike Indoor Nationals to be held March 13-15 at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. Hartung also qualified for the National Scholastic Indoor Championships to be held the same weekend in New York City. She is most likely to run in the Boston meet.
