CHAMPLAIN — Northeastern Clinton boys' basketball coach Robb Garrand had a simple explanation for his team's 52-40 loss to Plattsburgh High School Wednesday in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference play.
"Plattsburgh brought a high level of intensity to the game and we didn't," he said.
The outcome jumped the Hornets (9-4, 9-2) a half game ahead of the Cougars (9-3, 8-2) at the top of the Division I standings.
Ethan Votraw led Plattsburgh with 17 points and was followed by Ab Maknani and Nate Harrington with 12 each.
"Votraw played well on both ends of the court," Garrand said.
Tom Bedard was the lone Northeastern Clinton player in double figures with 11. Mike Manor was next with eight.
"We didn't move the ball well and played too much 1-on-1 basketball trying to create situations," Garrand said. "They were also more aggressive on the boards than we were.
"We now need to refocus."
The Cougars were down, 7-1, at the start of the game but took a 16-13 lead after one quarter.
The Hornets, however, made up the ground and then some by outscoring Northeastern Clinton by a combined 23-10 over the middle two stanzas.

BEEKMANTOWN — The Eagles answered the Chiefs' third-quarter spurt with a big fourth quarter — sparked by Greg Manney — to prevail.
Beekmantown's Keegan Ryan led all scorers with 20 points and also grabbed 16 rebounds. Manney scored 16, and Chris McIlroy added 10.
"Manney had a huge fourth quarter," Beekmantown coach Ryan Converse said. "He made three threes, and they were pretty clutch, crunch-time threes."
The Eagles (4-9, 4-6) led by eight at halftime, but the Chiefs outscored them 25-7 in the third.
"They had been playing man-to-man in the first half, and they came out and played us 2-3 zone in the third and it threw us off," Converse said. "And they just shot the lights out in that quarter."
Jake Liberty had seven of his nine points in the third to help Saranac take a 10-point advantage into the final frame. But Beekmantown reclaimed the lead on the strength of improved defense and Manney's shooting.
"We switched and played a little man-to-man early on and pressured them, and we were able to get some steals out of traps that led to easy baskets," Converse said. "That allowed us to get back into it. I think the difference in the game was we were able to make them shoot contested shots in the fourth quarter."
Saranac's Kasey Favreau hit three triples in the first quarter and totaled 14 points. Jeremy Bullis chipped in nine points and 10 rebounds for the Chiefs (8-5, 7-4).
