HERKIMER — A solid defensive effort was the difference for the Clinton Community College women’s basketball team Sunday in a 49-46 victory over Herkimer Community College.
The Cougars (6-5) avenged a 55-40 home loss to the Generals on Dec. 8.
“This was a huge win for us,” Clinton coach Donna Dixon said. “We mixed it up and played very well defensively.
“Herkimer shoots a lot of threes — they penetrate and kick the ball back to their shooters. We did a good job defending the lane and closing out on their shooters.”
Katrina Garrand and Emily Decker led the way for the Cougars.
Garrand finished with 16 points, eight rebounds, four assists and five steals, while Decker tallied a game-high 18 points.
Katelyn Gates chipped in with eight rebounds and Jessica Decker added six rebounds.
The Generals held a 27-23 lead at the half.
“We took the lead with 13 minutes left, and then it went back-and-forth after that,” Dixon said. “Garrand hit two free throws to put us ahead to stay with 3:15 left.
“With 30 seconds left, she hit a layup to give us a 49-46 lead, and we were able to get a defensive stop. The kids were determined to get the win today.”
The Cougars return home before heading back out on the road this coming weekend for games at Corning Community College and Finger Lakes Community College.

CORNING — It wasn’t the fast-paced tempo the Saints are more used to, but it was fine with coach Chad LaDue.
“It was a half-court game most of the time,” LaDue said. “We shared the basketball and were able to run some time off the clock. Brody Douglass is still out three more weeks for us, so I didn’t mind this type of game today.”
Steve Carder led North Country (13-4, 9-4) with 24 points and 13 rebounds, while Jared Heden added 15 points, Ian Henderson 14 points, Michael Boyea 10 points and six assists, and Steven Poulter, seven rebounds.
The Saints held a 28-19 lead after a low-scoring first half. The Barons cut their deficit to three points with less than five minutes to go, but Henderson hit a big 3-pointer as North Country regained the momentum.
“We’ve won our first three games in the semester on the road,” LaDue said. “I’m pleased with how we’re playing. This was a good regional win for us.”
Gladimy Saladin led Corning with 12 points and Jerome Jones followed with 10.
The Saints return home in hopes of keeping their winning streak going and will host Hudson Valley Community College at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
