Expos split in title defense debut

SARANAC — The Plattsburgh Cardinals, down to their last out, rallied for a 4-3 win in eight innings in the opener Sunday and then Steve Burris tossed a shutout in Game 2 for a 4-0 win and a sweep of the Airborne Speedway Padres in a season-opening Champlain Valley Baseball League doubleheader.

In Game 1, the Padres and starter Frank Brogna took a 3-0 lead into the top of the seventh. The Cardinals, however, rallied for three runs, capped by Tory Bouyea's RBI single, to tie it.

Zeke Perras then singled in the game-winning run in the eighth and reliever Gary Duquette, who took over for starter Dustin Currier, escaped a bases-loaded, nobody out jam when shortstop Bouyea made an outstanding lunging grab on Joey Painter's line drive up the middle and turned it into a game-ending doubleplay.

Bouyea and Casey Buck led the Cardinals with two hits each, while Jeff Norton, Eric Bell and Andrew Bombard had two hits apiece for the Padres.

In Game 2, Burris struck out seven in going the distance for the win to outduel Matt Rivers, who also struck out seven.

Bouyea added three more hits, including a double, while Burris and C.J. Worley chipped in with two hits each.

Norton and Bombard led Airborne Speedway with two hits apiece. Second baseman Alex Cole and right fielder Kevin Russell made some outstanding defensive plays on the day for the Padres.
