Saranac Lake reaches hockey semifinals

SARANAC LAKE — Saranac Lake scored two goals in the first two minutes of the game Tuesday night and skated to a 6-0 victory over Saranac in the Section VII boys' hockey quarterfinals.

Kyle Dora tallied with just 21 seconds gone in the game, and Devin Darrah scored just over a minute later to give the third-seeded Red Storm a 2-0 lead.

"Our two captains got us off to a great start," Saranac Lake coach Will Ellsworth said. "We wanted to come out early like that, and it took some of the wind out of Saranac's sails."

Matt Phelan, Quinn Urquhart, Bradley Shumway and Grant Strack also scored for Saranac Lake, which tallied two goals in each period.

Dora picked up four assists, and Devin Darrah added two.

Blake Darrah was called upon to make just seven saves while recording the shutout in net for Saranac Lake. Zach Lareau stopped 38 shots for the sixth-seeded Chiefs.

"We're 5-0-1 in our last six games, and hopefully we're peaking at the right time," Ellsworth said. "Saranac was a depleted team — they have a lot of injuries."

Tuesday's win sends the Red Storm into tonight's 6:30 p.m. semifinal against rival Lake Placid at the '32 Olympic Rink.

"That's going to be a battle — it's a grudge match," Ellsworth said. "We're looking forward to it because that's what playoff hockey is all about.

"The two towns are separated by 10 minutes. We split two regular season games. We won the first meeting, 5-3, and they won the second, 8-4. They won a coin flip to be the second seed."

Tonight's other semifinal has top-seeded Beekmantown hosting fifth-seeded Plattsburgh High School at 7 p.m. at the Ameri-Can North Sports Center. The Hornets advanced with Tuesday's 3-2, double-overtime win at Northeastern Clinton.
