Umpires associations to meet Thursday
PLATTSBURGH — The Lyon Mountain Baseball Umpires and Northern Adirondack Softball Umpires associations will meet Thursday, Feb. 4, at 6 p.m., at American Legion Post 20 on the Quarry Road.

Broomball tournament has 2 openings
WEST PLATTSBURGH — The Winterfest 2010 Broomball Tournament, scheduled for this weekend at the West Plattsburgh American Legion 1619, has openings for two teams. Games will begin Friday night and continue Saturday with the final on Sunday afternoon.

Anyone interested in entering a team is asked to do so by 4 p.m. Thursday. The brackets will be drawn Thursday evening.

Chazy Youth Hockey to offer spring league
CHAZY — Chazy Youth Hockey will host a Spring Hockey League again this year to run from March 1 to April 7. A Mini-Mite cross-ice level has been added this year.

The league will offer hockey games to any boy or girl with a birth year of 1991 or younger. All teams will be coed, all levels will be non-checking, all players will receive a jersey and teams will play 8-10 games. Teams will be divided by the coaches.

Fee for this year will remain $75 for the Mite to Midget level and $50 for Mini-Mite players. You can register online at www.ChazyYouthHockey.com. Registration is on a first-come, first -served basis and CYH asks that you complete all forms by Feb. 19.

Lost Pond Club lists rabbit derby results
REDFORD — The Lost Pond Club held its first annual rabbit derby last week at the American Legion Post 1618 in Redford. First place with the heaviest rabbit, with a weight of 4.50 pounds, was Nate Siskavich, Saranac.

Second place, with a weight of 4.270 pounds, was Jim Mazzotte, Saranac, and third place, with a rabbit weighing in at 4.205 pounds, was Randy Riley of Willmington. Randy Gilmet, Saranac, won the "No Rabbit" drawing.

The 50-50 drawing went to Todd Nelson, Keeseville, and the black powder rifle was won by Bernie Waldron, Hastings. Dispite a bitter cold weekend, the turnout for the derby was excellent. The 2011 tournament will be held the last weekend of January.

Barkeaters rugby invites teens to meeting
WILLSBORO — The Adirondack Barkeaters U-19 Rugby Football Club invites area teenage boys and girls to attend an informational meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m. at the Willsborough Bowling Center or Thursday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m., at the Peru Town Hall. Indoor practices will begin the week of Feb. 15.

ECAC honors Cards' DiJulio, Caldwell
CENTERVILLE, Mass. — Plattsburgh State's Megan DiJulio and RIT's Katie Stack have been named Co-Players of the Week in ECAC West hockey for the period ending Feb. 1.

DiJulio, a junior forward from Slave Lake, Alberta, scored four goals and added two assists as the Cardinals went 3-0 for the week, 2-0 in ECAC West play. DiJulio assumed the Cardinals' lead in goals with 15. She is second in points with 21.

Plattsburgh State's Jordan Caldwell was named ECAC West Rookie of the Week. She had one goal and three assists last week. Caldwell leads the Cardinal rookies with nine assists and 12 points.

AuSable youth hoop tourney has openings
AUSABLE FORKS — The 21st-Annual Missing Children's Basketball Tournament, for area 5th and 6th grade boys and girls teams, is scheduled for March 11-14 at the Town of Jay community Center and Holy Name School in Au Sable Forks.

The tournament entry fee is $150 with the format double elimination. There will be eight teams in the girls and boys division. There are openings in both divisions. No all-star teams will be allowed and the teams must have participated in the Clinton, Franklin or Essex County youth leagues,or the Adirondack Catholic School league to be eligible. Any team that plays in its own town league is eligible, providing all players are from that township.

28th Placid Loppet slated for Saturday
LAKE PLACID — The 28th-annual Lake Placid Loppet, presented by High Peaks Cyclery, cross-country ski races will be held Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Olympic Sports Complex Cross Country Ski Center.

This annual event, presented by High Peaks Cyclery in Lake Placid, attracts hundreds of skiers from across the United States and Canada. It consists of a 50 kilometer Loppet (30.1 miles) and a 25-kilometer Kort-Loppet (about 15 miles).

There will be classic technique and free technique race starts for both the 25K and 50K races.

Cardinal squirts defeat Oswego, St. Albans
ALBANY — Gavin Giroux scored four goals in a span of just over six minutes Saturday to lead the Junior Cardinal squirts to a 9-0 victory over the Oswego Pirates in Albany. Giroux also had two assists while Josh McCauley chipped in with three goals and an assist.

Kurtis Olsen added a goal and two assists while Paul Fine-Lease completed the scoring. Chase Bedore and Brendan Whalen each picked up two assists with Luke Carpenter and Christian Thomas getting one apiece. Cole Harvey made 15 saves for the shutout.

On Sunday, the Cardinals skated to a 6-1 win over St Albans at the Ameri-Can Sports Center in Plattsburgh. Several good passing plays led to four first-period goals.

J.B. Chapin netted two goals to lead the Cardinals while Chase Bedore, playing his first game as a winger, added a goal and played well at both ends of the ice.

Gavin Giroux, Luke Carpenter and Christian Thomas rounded out the scoring. Olsen, Giroux, Thomas and Whalen added assists.

Cole Harvey, playing his best hockey of the season, recorded 11 saves for the victory.
