Padres take 1-0 lead in CVBL semifinals

PLATTSBURGH — There was an entertaining Champlain Valley Baseball League semifinal playoff game Sunday at South Acres Field.

But only one as the first game of the day ended up being a forfeit.

The fourth-seeded Airborne Speedway Padres slugged their way to a 13-10 victory over the top-seeded Meron’s Expos to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series, with games two and three, if necessary, back at South Acres this coming weekend.

In the first scheduled semifinal, the Lyon Mountain Miners won by forfeit over the Fourth Ward Cardinals.

PLATTSBURGH — Airborne Speedway and Meron’s battled back-and-forth before Cory Trombley’s 3-run double in a 7-run bottom of the seventh inning put the Padres ahead to stay.

Shane Perrotte had a big day offensively for the Padres with four hits, including three triples. Matt Rivers added two singles and a double, while Mark Eggleston and Chris Markwica added two hits each. Kevin Russell doubled.

Kris Cauchon, Billy Davis and Nick Barton led the Expos with three hits each, with Cauchon and Davis getting doubles. Mark Passino added a single and double.

Joey Painter, the second of three Airborne Speedway pitchers, picked up the win, while Meron’s starter Davis took the loss. There were a combined 33 hits in the contest, 18 by the Padres and 15 by the Expos.

Airborne Speedway held a 3-0 lead through three before Meron’s rallied for an 8-6 advantage heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Miners win by forfeit

PLATTSBURGH — The defending champion Cardinals were unable to field enough players for their game against the Miners.

Second-seeded Lyon Mountain will entertain the third-seeded Cardinals at the Big Ball Diamond this coming Sunday for games two and three, if necessary.
