Hornets headline CVAC softball all-stars

The Plattsburgh High softball team won the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Division I title before losing to Peru, 1-0, in the Section VII Class B title game to finish 2011 16-2.

The Hornets had two key players honored for their success — Charisse Abellard was named Most Outstanding Player, and Kristin Fisher earned Outstanding Pitcher honors.

Abellard, a senior shortstop, batted .446 with 29 runs scored, 29 hits and 14 RBI.

Fisher, a senior pitcher, was nearly untouchable throughout the year. She pitched every inning for the Hornets, finishing with a 0.80 ERA. Opponents hit just .166 off Fisher as she gave up 70 hits in 114 innings while striking out 144.

Saranac Lake's Diana Schwartz was named Coach of the Year. Schwartz, in her third season, oversaw the Red Storm's improvement from four wins in 2010 to an 8-6 record in 2011. Saranac Lake lost a close game to eventual Class B champion Peru in the quarterfinals.

Division I All-Stars

Taylor Manor, Beekmantown- Manor, a senior center fielder, helped the Eagles finish 8-9.

Taylor Rock, Peru- Rock, a junior infielder, led the Class B champion Indians with a .439 batting average, 17 RBI, two doubles, three triples, a home run and a .467 on-base percentage. She was also a strong defensive player whether at first, third or short.

Olivia Furnia, Saranac- Furnia, a junior center fielder, batted .379 with five doubles, five triples and 13 RBI. She also drew 15 walks, scored 17 runs and was the team leader in batting average, doubles, triples, extra-base hits and walks.

Sydney Battistoni, Saranac Lake- Battistoni, a sophomore third baseman, was the anchor of the Red Storm's infield. She led the team with six doubles and batted .421. She also had six stolen bases.

Rachel Collier, Peru- Collier, a senior center fielder, was a strong defensive player and four-year starter who had no errors this season. She had 14 hits, two doubles, six stolen bases and didn't strike out once while boasting a .381 on-base percentage.

Kelly Kezar, Peru- Kezar, a senior shortstop and pitcher, was a four-year varsity player who provided a strong arm at short. She batted .400, had 13 RBi and a .460 on-base percentage.

Alisha Ducatte, Saranac- Ducatte, a junior shortstop, was the sparkplug of the Chiefs' offense as the leadoff hitter. She led the team in hits (25), runs (22) and stolen bases (eight). She batted .362 and had 10 RBI.

Megan Moody, Saranac Lake- Moody, a sophomore centerfielder, earned the leadoff position for the Red Storm due to her speed. She stole six bases, had 11 RBI and batted .417.

Chelsea LaFountain, Saranac Lake- LaFountain, a junior shortstop, led the team with 25 RBI, a .455 batting average, four triples and one home run.

Division II All-Stars

Kelly McBreairty, AuSable Valley- McBreairty, a third-year varsity starter and senior centerfielder, was the Patriots' leadoff hitter and catalyst on offense. She led the team in batting average (.438), stolen bases (13), runs (23) and hits (21). Her on-base percentage was near .600.

Johanna Recny, AuSable Valley- Recny, a three-year starter and senior first baseman, batted .348 with two home runs. She was second on the team in RBI and had just one error all season.

Kayla Taylor, AuSable Valley- Taylor, a four-year starter and senior catcher, was a strong defensive player, throwing out more than 50 percent of would-be base-stealers. She also picked off five runners. Her .340 average was a career-high.

Jena Finnegan, AuSable Valley- Finnegan, a four-year starter and senior shortstop, was a leader for the Patriots who was second on the team with a .377 batting average. She scored 20 runs and had 20 hits, many of which came in clutch situations.

Danielle Balestrini, Lake Placid- Balestrini, a junior catcher, aided the Blue Bombers to a 7-12 record as the team reached the Section VII Class C title game.

Emily Garrand, Northern Adirondack- Garrand, who excelled at second base and did a good job on the mound, was second on the Bobcats with a .291 batting average.

Shauna Perry, Northern Adirondack- Perry led the Bobcats with a .300 batting average and was an excellent shortstop.

Andrea Rich, Ticonderoga- Rich, a sophomore outfielder, batted .446 with five doubles, three home runs and 13 RBI for the Section VII Class C champions.

Katie Palandrani, Ticonderoga- Palandrani, a sophomore catcher, batted .444 with three doubles, three triples, two home runs and 12 RBI.
