PLATTSBURGH— Clinton Community College struggled for nearly 80 minutes to score a goal, but finally broke through with two late tallies in a 2-1 victory over Fulton-Montgomery Community College Monday.
“The game was all us in the first half,” Clinton coach Zac Eppler said. “We out-possessed, out-shot, had better passes and switches, but just couldn’t finish.”
Both teams played a scoreless first half, but Fulton-Montgomery got on the board with a goal 29 minutes in from Jeahoon Chun. The Cougars responded six minutes later when Jordan Knight buried a goal from Jamie Davison. Knight then gave Clinton a 2-1 lead when he converted on a penalty kick just two minutes later.
“We were finally able to get those shots to go in. Until then, we had shots either going right at their keeper or wide of the net,” Eppler said.
The Cougars held a 29-12 shot advantage and keeper Travis Agoney made 11 saves for the win while Austin Lee had 21 stops for the Raiders.
“I was happy with our players all around,” Eppler said. “Ben Smith had a good game on defense and Kaleb Snide and Matt Leta did well in our midfield.”
Clinton improves to 10-5 and plays Wednesday at Word of Life.

SARANAC LAKE — Graham Whalen scored two first-half goals and Jefferson Community College held on for a 2-1 triumph over North Country Community College.
Whalen opened the scoring with just under 14 minutes left in the first half after burying an uncontested shot. The Cannoneers added a late Whalen goal to enter halftime with a 2-0 lead.
“We had two mental lapses in that first half which led to the two goals,” North Country coach Adam diVincenzo said. “The first goal we left Whalen wide open and the second one we just didn’t get a step on him that we needed.”
The Saints broke up the shutout with a Winterson Joseph goal early in the second half. Jefferson Community College held on for the one-goal win despite not registering a shot the entire second half.
“We were the better team today, but couldn’t get the job done,” diVincenzo said. “That kind of seems to be the trend for us lately.”
The Saints lost their fourth straight game and fell to 7-6 while the Cannoneers improved to 3-8-2.
Beau Standford had three saves for North Country while Sam Lyndaker made six saves in the win.
North Country is back in action Wednesday against Adirondack Community College.
