PITTSBURGH — Andrew Roberts' first trip to a national fishing tournament proved to be a rewarding experience, to say the least.

The Beekmantown Central freshman School won the TBF Eastern Division Junior Championship for his age group (11-14) Friday during the FLW Championships in Pittsburgh.

Roberts came back Saturday to fish in the National Guard Junior World Championships against young anglers from 41 states. He placed second in his age group and third, overall.

Roberts, The Bass Federation junior state champion from New York, was sponsored by the Plattsburgh Bass Club.

Roberts, who fished with FLW pros on Saturday, earned a $3,000 scholarship, $150 Evinrude gift certificate and a one-year sponsorship deal with Berkley, beginning Jan. 1. He will represent Berkley in tournaments next year, making appearances, and giving seminars. Roberts also was given $1,000 in free merchandise from Berkley.

Rainy conditions made for tough fishing on the swift waters of the Allegheny, Ohio and Monongahela rivers Saturday in Pittsburgh. The pros and juniors had trouble catching bass with any size.

Roberts landed a one-pound, 12-ounce smallmouth Friday to win his division and a one-pound, 7-ounce Saturday. The winning weight in his age group was 2 pounds, 12 ounces.
