PLATTSBURGH — There was something lacking in the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team's 4-2 victory over Buffalo State in State University of New York Athletic Conference play Friday night at the Stafford Ice Arena.

Cardinals' head coach Bob Emery had a pretty good idea what is was.

"We lacked emotion tonight," he said. "It showed on the scoreboard what players did come to play with emotion.

"We did a good job breaking the puck out of our zone and limiting their shots. We didn't play badly, but we didn't play great."

Kyle Kudroch tallied two goals while linemate Jared Docking added a goal and two assists as the Cardinals (15-4-4, 11-2-1) clinched second place in the SUNYAC regular season standings.

Plattsburgh State, which skated to a 7-0 win at Buffalo State earlier in the season, didn't put the Bengals (6-16-1, 2-12) away until Docking's empty-net goal with 43 seconds remaining in the third period.

"Buffalo State did a good job slowing the game down," Emery said. "Sometimes you play down to your opponent's record, even though Buffalo State is a better team than their record would indicate."

It was a scoreless game until Kudroch scored goals at 18:33 and 19:14 for a 2-0 Plattsburgh State lead after one.

On the first goal, Docking outbattled a Buffalo State player for the puck and set up Kudroch, who slipped it past Bengals' goaltender Johnathan Sourwine.

On the second, Kudroch got the puck from Docking and sent a shot from straight on up top to beat Sourwine.

Buffalo State cut its deficit in half at 4:11 of the second period when D'Arcy Thomas took a pass on the far side of the net and tallied a power-play goal.

But, defenseman Ryan Corry scored on a deflected shot at 15:42 to put the Cardinals back up by two goals.

It stayed 3-1 until Justin Knee pulled the Bengals to within one with a power-play goal at 12:05 of the third when Plattsburgh State goaltender Ryan Williams was caught out of position.

Plattsburgh State finished with a 36-17 shot advantage, but had a rough time on the powerplay, going 0-for-5, including coming up empty on a five-minute major in the opening period. Buffalo State, meanwhile, went 2-for-5 with a man advantage.

"At times, we moved the puck well on the powerplay," said Emery. "But, at other times, we didn't play smart.

"We're not finding the back of the net enough. We're not getting the easy goals in tough places."

The Cardinals host Fredonia tonight at 7 p.m. The Blue Devils skated to a wild 10-6 victory at Potsdam Friday night as the two teams combined for 16 goals on a combined 54 shots on goal.
