PLATTSBURGH — With all the new faces in the Plattsburgh State men's hockey line-up this season, there was no guarantee the Cardinals would be returning to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
As it turns out, however, the Cardinals are in after receiving an at-large berth Sunday night.
Plattsburgh State (18-5-4) will play at Middlebury College on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals.
"We've had an up-and-down season, with a lot of adversity," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "We had player suspensions, illnesses and injuries. We lost four of our top six defensemen, our goaltender and top two scorers from last year.
"Plus, we've played the toughest schedule in the country (in Division III), with almost all the more difficult games on the road. So, we can't ask for much more. Here we are — three games away from winning a national title."
First-round games in the NCAA Tournament will be played on Wednesday with Adrian (24-3) at St. Norbert (21-3-3), St. Thomas, Minn. (13-10-4), at Gustavus Adolphus (19-6-2), and Curry (19-8-1) at Elmira (18-8-1).
The other three quarterfinals on Saturday include the first-round winners in the West, the Curry/Elmira winner at Norwich (23-1-4), and Bowdoin (19-6-1) at Oswego (25-2).
The national semifinals and championship game will be played at the Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid on March 19-20.
Middlebury (19-4-4) earned the right to host the quarterfinal with a 3-2 win at Bowdoin Sunday to win the NESCAC Tournament title. Charlie Townsend broke a 2-all tie with the game-winning goal at 18:18 of the third period.
"The only other circumstance would have been if we would have finished ahead of Middlebury," said Emery. "That way we could have played them at home in front of our fans.
"But, we're still playing close to home and it's a pretty good draw. They're a tough team, but we split two games with them this year. It could be a lot worse draw for us."
The Cardinals skated to a 3-1 win over the Panthers in the opening round of the Annual PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout at Norwich University back on Nov. 27.
Then, on Feb. 2, Middlebury posted a 5-3 home win over the Cardinals.
Plattsburgh State missed out on an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament when it dropped a 6-3 decision to Oswego in the State University of New York Athletic Conference Tournament championship game Saturday night.
"We can learn a lot from the Oswego game," Emery said. "We know we have to do a better job keeping the puck out of our net. Those was the most goals we have given up in a game this year."
