PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh High Hornets have been regulars in the Section VII Class B championship game.
Plattsburgh High reached the finals in three of the last five years. They return this year after a one-season hiatus.
Its opponent is anything but familiar.
AuSable Valley scored an upset victory over top-seeded Peru in the semifinals to advance to its first class title game since winning the Class C title in 1995.
The fourth-seeded Patriots face a tough task against the third-seeded Hornets when they meet today at 3:30 p.m. at the Plattsburgh State Field House.
Plattsburgh High defeated AuSable Valley, 67-52, in a January meeting. But the Patriots got to the title game by exacting revenge against another team that handed it a lopsided defeat.
Peru defeated AuSable Valley, 57-43, in the regular season.
The third-seeded Hornets average nearly 70 points per game and have three players averaging double figures. Kyle LaPoint leads the way with 14.7, followed by Kyle Knight with 13.8 and Tre Bucci with 10.9.
The Hornets made 68 3-pointers over the season, led by Jordan Knight's 25.
AuSable Valley also has its own high-scoring trio.
TJ Burl (14.8), Brody Douglass (13.7) and Jordan Coolidge (11.5) all average double figures in an offense that averages 58.7 points per game.
The Patriots are also plenty adept behind the arc, where they connected on 74 shots.
Coolidge leads the team with 25 triples, with Burl at 22 and Douglass at 12.
Ti, Seton meet again
For the past four years, Ticonderoga and Seton Catholic have met in the title game to determine the Class C champion.
The Knights and the Sentinels were automatically in the championship game after the Northern Adirondack team cancelled its season midway through the year.
The two teams square off today at 1:45 p.m. at the Field House.
Seton Catholic won the title last season, 51-43, but return to the title game with a daunting task ahead.
The Knights have lost several student athletes that has led to a slim roster. Seton Catholic won just one game all year, a 38-29 victory over Northern Adirondack.
Six-foot-eight Carson Hynes leads the Knights with 7.3 points per game.
Seton Catholic's offense averaged just 23.6 points per game. Opponents are averaging 64.2 against the Knights.
Ticonderoga had a down year, but managed to win two of its final three games. That included a 65-21 rout against Seton Catholic in the regular season finale.
The Knights and Sentinels have met twice this season, and Ticonderoga came away with two wins with an average margin of victory of 42.5.
Robert Kearns leads Ticonderoga with 10 points per game. The senior guard also connected on 10 3-pointers.
Moriah back in
title game
Moriah has reached the title game the past two years only to fall to Westport each time.
That won't happen this year.
Third-seeded Crown Point pulled off an upset win against top-seeded Westport, ranked ninth in the state, to advance to its first Class D title game since 2000.
The Panthers play the top-seeded Vikings at noon today in the Field House.
The Vikings face a formidable job of trying to slow down 6-foot-8 forward John Budwick, one of the area's leading scorers at 21.7 points per game.
Budwick scored 13 of his 19 points in the second half against Westport.
Moriah limited Indian Lake/Long Lake to just 30 points in a semifinal win.
The Vikings were dealt a heavy blow when they lost leading scorer Nate Gilbo to a torn ACL in Moriah's quarterfinal win against Schroon Lake.
Moriah weathered the adversity so far to make it to the championship game.
Hayden Whalen averages 9.6 points and Nick Gilbo is third with 9.2. Ralph Schofield is averaging 8.6.
The Vikings don't take too many shots behind the arc and have made just 22 all season, led by Tom Tesar's six.
Will Glebus is second on the Panthers with 9.2 points per game and Nate Tabor is averaging 5.3 to go along with his team-leading 33 triples.
