PLATTSBURGH — The Cardinals overcame deficits all year by making big plays at the end of games.
Playing on the game's biggest stage, the NCAA Tournament, Plattsburgh State failed to capitalize on several opportunities.
And those big plays never materialized.
Diloo Brown scored 31 points and SUNY Institute of Technology held on for a 71-65 win after nearly blowing an 18-point cushion Friday night in the first round of the Division III men's basketball tournament at Memorial Hall.
SUNYIT (25-4) won a first-round NCAA tournament game for the second year in a row and plays Medaille 7 p.m. today for a shot at the Sweet 16.
"We fought hard, but we didn't quite make the plays in the end and (that's) something that I think we've grown accustomed to doing all year," Plattsburgh State coach Tom Curle said.
Trailing 67-64 with nine seconds left in the game, Steve Thomas tried to make a pass from the top of the key to Danny Tangney in the left corner.
The pass was easily intercepted by a Wildcat player who got the ball to David Golembiowski. He was fouled and put the game away by sinking a pair of free throws.
It was just one of many critical errors made late by the Cardinals, who turned the ball over four times in the final three minutes.
Errol Daniyan's free throw with 2:48 left made it 63-60. Chris Ruiz grabbed an offensive rebound after Daniyan missed the second. Carl Munnerlyn missed a good look from beyond the arc and then misfired again after Daniyan corralled the offensive board.
Kevin Capiello hit a big 3-pointer with 1:55 left to put the Wildcats up, 67-62.
Ruiz scored on a putback and was fouled, but he missed the free throw.
Munnerlyn intercepted a pass at midcourt with 39 seconds left. He fed Daniyan for a transition layup, but Daniyan bobbled the pass and was called for traveling.
The Cardinals turned the ball over on their next two possessions, including the ill-advised pass Thomas tried to make to Tangney.
"We came back, we had a chance, but as coach said — we didn't make the plays at the end," Ruiz said.
Plattsburgh State was able to limit Golembiowski, SUNYIT's leading scorer, to 14 points on 5-for-16 shooting. But the Cardinals had few answers for Brown.
Brown scored 19 points in the first half as SUNYIT went into intermission leading, 41-29.
The senior guard connected on 6-for-11 from long range; some of them were deep, some with a defender right in front of him.
"I think we underestimated him," Ruiz said. "We gave him too much space."
Ruiz and Thomas both finished with 18 points for the Cardinals (21-8). Daniyan added 17 points and nine rebounds.
The Cardinals shot 40.3 percent from the field, but went just 8-for-26 from beyond the arc.
Munnerlyn, a 45.8 percent 3-point shooter, hit on just 2-for-9 from deep and finished with eight points.
"They never gave up," SUNYIT coach Kevin Grimmer said. "They had as good a shot down the stretch as we did. They forced some turnovers.
"We were fortunate that maybe we forced some turnovers down the stretch and made some big shots."
Floyd Thorne added 15 points and seven rebounds for SUNYIT, which won its 17th straight game.
The Wildcats led by six points with seven minutes left in the first half before going on a 14-2 run that pushed their lead to 18.
Munnerlyn hit a 3-pointer with 25 seconds left to cut the deficit to 12 before the buzzer.
Following the game, Curle touched on the fact that four of the Cardinals top players — Ruiz, Daniyan, Thomas and Munnerlyn — are just juniors.
"When our opponent was celebrating, which they earned the right to do that, I said I want that to haunt you," Curle said. "There are no guarantees, I don't care who we have coming back.
"Next year is a whole other year, and next year is going to be more determined upon what they do from this point forward."
